What Could Never Be

Not knowing that when you saw him

It would be the last time.

Remembering the way he gazed

As I walked away

And he said goodbye to me

The lonely night after

That last encounter.

A death of someone you wanted

To share a life with.

A family that will never be.

A parentless child.

Taking his daughter from the funeral

To miss the crying crowd.

The sadness in her eyes when

You tell her he's not coming back.

Hearing her ask why

He left her here alone.

Looking into her eyes,

And seeing him.

Knowing I won't be the one

To take care of her.

The pain you see in a family

Having to tell his loved ones

His final words about life.

Walking the paths we once took,

Hand-in-hand.

Sorting through your loved one's clothes,

His scent still lingering...

Sleeping in his shirt just to have

Some part of him still close.

Realizing all the things he said,

When it's far too late to help.
