"Don't think, try" How the Scots Invented the Modern World
I walked into ocotillo high school (AKA my own personal social hell) right when first period was starting. As usual just in the nick of time because our teacher, Ms. Hicks called the last name on the list, me.
"Alyssa Zandle" "here" I called. Ms.Hicks gave me a disapproving glance and I returned it with a devious smile. Our teacher got On with the lesson almost too quickly as if she thought she was outsmarted by a freshman.
For me lessons were pointless, because the only useful thing I got out of high school so far was how to read during a lesson without getting caught.
In my book right now the beautiful princess was meeting her true love. "lucky" I mumbled a little louder than I expected. I got a few strange looks but luckily Ms. Hicks didn't notice.
The rest of the day passed by in a blur and before I knew it it was lunch time. Great, I thought to myself even though I knew there was nothing to worry about.
For I have already committed social suicide by sitting at a table alone in the far corner of the cafeteria reading my book the whole time, and not even touching my food. That for some reason I bought every day, better safe than sorry I guess.
Suddenly as I was getting to the last mind blowing pages of my book I feel someone's eyes on me.
I looked up and I see her at a table next to mine. She had beautiful long brown hair, tan skin, and bright clever looking green eyes. She was also alone. I tried to get back to my reading when I herd her ask my name. I looked up again, her voice was timid and she sounded shy.
" My name's Alyssa, Alyssa Zander" Then she did the most surprising thing she got up out of her seat and started moving toward me and the cafeteria went silent. Every eye was watching her every move.
No one has ever tried to sit by me for the whole six months I've been here and EVERYONE knows it. She sat down and stated "My name's Samantha, but you can call me Sam" She has seemed to have gained confidence in the last few seconds.
The noise in the lunch room started just as suddenly as it stopped, just like that everyone went back to their fabulous lives, while I was still dumbfounded.
" so" she said, " I'm new here" " Can you show me the ropes?"
"I don't know if I'm the right person to be talking to, I'm not exactly at the top of the social scale" I said automatically. "
Then she got up and thought I had convinced her to leave. Until she was standing before me with a look of disgust on her face.
"Do you really think I want to be friends with those wanna be's" a smile crept on to her face and I quickly learned her pearly white smile was contagious!
Soon enough we were both beaming at each other like a couple of idiots. And without thinking or any hesitation I asked her a question that almost sounded foreign.
"Do you by any chance have plans today?" I blurted! "Oh I'm sorry" She said. "I do I'm hanging with my friend"
"Oh" I said trying not to sound disappointed. By the look on her face I know I epically failed. " Infact she is the only friend I have at this whole school." She bragged. Wow, I thought to myself not only deny me but confirm we are not friends that's cold.
"She is sitting right next to me!" It took a minute for that to process. I actually have a friend! Than in between our laughing fits we decided to meet at the mall at 3:30.
