Chapter 1

I sit in my bedroom replaying what happened last night.

When Scott asked me to dinner I was thrilled. He said that the reason he asked was to celebrate the case we just won. He and I have been business partners for 3 years now, apparently it is only going to be three years seeing that he left and all.

Anyways, that is totally off topic from what I am talking about.

This case was by far the longest, most difficult case we had dealt with yet. My client, more like “our” client but I would rather not discuss my lack of partnership now. Therefore, the client is “mine” because I have to officially “close” the case Tuesday of next week.

We were fairly confident that we had one the case because the lack of counter arguments and valid information the other client's lawyer wasn't able to provide.

After the long case, when I say long I mean a nine and a half month process full of juries, false accusations, and a constant reoccurring case of “bad memory”. Scott and I of course grew closer after this case after long, hardworking hours of overtime. I remember how the office would close up at 5'o clock. The secretary always came into our office and told us how the whole office was leaving because they had a family they needed to get back to. Ruth Ann, the secretary always remembered to leave a new pot of coffee on for us.

Those overtime hours always resulting in him and I walking the two and a half blocks to get to my apartment. He would always tell me the stupidest joke he knew. Of course he didn't care that they were corny or didn't have a point at all, he only cared that it made me laugh and give him a head shake with a half smile on my face.

After he would tell me the joke he would quickly give me a peck on my cheek and say, “Good night, beautiful.” He would then proceed to walk away, right before he turned he would give me his trademark smirk knowing that I would stare at his back until he turned the corner and walk back to his car parked right around the corner.

When he would turn the corner I was always able to catch him shifting his gaze to make sure I was still there, watching him. He then would give me a short, brief wave and yet another smirk that followed. I, of course being the kind woman my mother raised me to be, would wave and return his half smile.

Once all of those exchanges I would climb the three flight of stairs with a light smile but heavy heart.
