A cold rainy day in rural Maine would find me searching for a house. This was not a standard place; each neighbor is at least two hundred yards apart from you, and not to mention you are at least a hundred miles from the nearest store. However I still wanted to live there. When I stumbled upon the house I was meant to look at I saw a dog on the front porch. It was a large dog, probably a mastiff .i thought to myself. So I took caution to go around the huge dog.
All of the wile the dogs eyes never left the road from where I had come. After looking through the house I was shocked to find that the dog was still there. I tried coxing it into my truck but the dog wouldn’t budge. After trying and trying unsuccessfully this states awful timing kicked in and it started to rain. After one more attempt to get the dog into my truck, I headed home. In the next few weeks I spent there I tried to learn more about the dog.
The neighbors all told me that the dogs master had gone off on a trip and had died in a car crash and the dog had waited on the porch staring at the road from which his master had left ever sense. This story brought tears to my eyes as I am a loving dog owner myself. But each time I tried, the dog would not come.
“The last thing they ever saw before their own car crash was the mastiff sitting on the porch forever awaiting the return of his master.”
Years later in the place beyond the world we live in, I saw a dog much like that loyal mastiff. Except this one was more exited and puppyish sitting next to a youthful man on a hill. It looked as though they were both watching some unseen film.
Our loved ones don’t last forever so enjoy them while you can.
In loving memory of Jake and Kodi Libby
If there is a place such as heaven, these dogs belong there.
