I stared into the darkness, sitting against an old gnarled tree. The trunk pressed against my back, and I felt a cool wind whistle through my hair. The tree stood off to the side in an old abandoned office building that had crumbled to remains after a Bettle attack.
Suddenly the temperature dropped and I glanced up as a freezing wind swept down my back. On the lowest branch of the knarled tree crouched a masked figure, narrowed brown eyes on me. It was a young girl, about the same age as me. She sported a blue tunic, black leggings, brown boots, and a white hooded cape. I guessed a Snow Native, based off her aura of frosted nights tinged with snow to come. She must be Yumi, unless M was a girl too.
"Hi." I said stupidly, eyes fixed on hers.
The girl slid down and knelt next to me. "Are you the one known as Deshi?"
I nodded. "And you are...?"
"M." Her voice was like melted butter, too soft and sweet for what I saw. She leaned forward and I noticed the katana strapped to her back. "Someone is coming. Echoes... It must be that Drakon Slayer Yumi. She is from the Echo Dimension."
I blinked. Could she really tell all that from here? I stared in the direction she was looking, and indeed a girl did step into my sight a few minutes later. She was small, wearing a red hooded cape over a dark dress that went to her knees. Her legs were in long black boots, and a large black-and-red scythe was in her hand. As she looked up, her amber eyes seemed to spark in the dim light. Long reddish-brown hair cascaded down past her shoulders, framing a tanned face. "I am Yumi." Her voice echoed through the area, bouncing off the walls. "May I guess you to be the assassin M and Deshi of the Eagle?" She raised an eyebrow as she approached us. The aura around her radiated a tickling warmth tinted with humor and eloquence.
I also had to admit she was awfully pretty. No offense to M, but Yumi's hair and eyes were gorgeous, and her outfit gave her a girly but powerful feel. M was a cold and obviously dangerous figure who I wouldn't have had guessed was a girl.
Before she had fully reached me, Yumi turned on her heel, scythe raised. "Who goes there?" Her voice was powerful.
A dark laugh, and a shadow peeled itself from the wall. In a heartbeat, M was across the room, katana to the newcomer's throat. "You!" She hissed, eyes wide.
The boy laughed again. His dark hair and eyes framed his pale face, dark clothes the same inky black. A bag was slung across his back, twin daggers strapped to his calves. I knew this boy had to be the Seer.
"I knew you'd be here, Mikaela." Feng said, eyes on M.
She hissed again, reminding me of a cat, and pressed her katana's blade against his throat enough to make a bead of blood appear. "Don't you dare say that name. I left it behind long ago, and there's no need for you to bring it up."
Feng met my eye, giving me a look like, Girls. "Yes yes. Now they all know you're real name. What a shame. It's no secret, Mikaela. I know all you're names. Deshi, Mikaela, Yumiko. What's the difference?" He shrugged and stepped back into the shadows, disappearing.
M growled and turned around, but Feng was still there, and he appeared behind her, grasping her arm and twisting it behind her. She smirked and dislocated her shoulder, turning out of his grip and pressing him against the wall with fiery eyes.
"Guys, stop. We're a team now, aren't we?" Yumi's voice caused us all to freeze. She stood in the center of the room, eyes ablaze. Her stance was powerful. "We are a team."
