Jordan's POV

It was exam day. Every student was sat at their desk, busily working on my engineering final. I had been writing and rewriting this final for years, I had finally made the perfect exam. Heh, final-ly. I'm so funny.

I absentmindedly straightened the name plate on my desk. Jordan C. Maron. Pencils were scratching out a melody that was almost cheerful sounding. I leaned back in my chair and smiled. Yes, life was good.

A few hours later I hopped in my car and drove home. Traffic was terrible, why was everyone on the road? Was there some holiday I forgot, why did it look like everyone was leaving town at the same time?

I trudged into my apartment and plopped down on the sofa. Today wasnt exactly unpleasent, but it sure as heck was tiring. I slouched towards a book on the coffee table and clicked on the TV with my butt. Oh well, must've sat on the remote.

I was about to stand up and turn off the TV when I heard what the news caster was saying. "An unknown source has delivered a message to Washington D.C. declaring war unless the President steps down from office and surrenders leadership. It is unknown where these threats come from. No armed forces have been sighted yet, but several gas bombs have been dropped as a form of biological warfare. The effects of these bombs are unknown. Please avoid any wreckage and any explosion sites at all costs. The next predicted drop sites are-"

But I couldn't hear her over the ringing in my ears and the banging from out side. I ran to the window. A fire was giving off green and grey smoke a few blocks down from my apartment building. I stared numbly as the TV droned on. "Thank you for listening to this Public Service Announcement. This is Lydia, signing off- An unknown source..." The message repeated itself. How old was that broadcast?
I cussed. Probably old enough that everyone knew to get out of town. Everyone but me. Surely other people didn't see it, surely I could still get out with everyone else.

I was only in the car for a couple seconds when I saw the first one. It was mangled and bloody, like it just walked out of an explosion. I realized with a sinking feeling that maybe it did. It was dead. And it was moving. slowly, clumsily, but it could see me through its already cloudy eyes and it was moving towards my car. I hit the gas.

I drove around wreckage and gaped at more sickly green corpses trudging around together. It was clear to me now that most people, if not all of them, were killed by the bomb. The air no longer had all that green smoke in it so I assumed that the worst of it had passed, but all those people. I tried to take control of my nausea as I drove on. It didn't take long to discover that most major roadways were blocked by debris. My low gas warning beeped politely. Where could I go that was safe with barely any gas left in the tank? I could always go back to the school I guess. After all, it was exam day.
