Wag's POV
My phone beeped and woke me up. I rolled over in bed and checked. Another news alert, the bio bombs were being dropped closer and closer to my home. Rapidly. If everything goes according to pattern and prediction, they'll be here in, crap a few hours.Time to move the family. I rolled over on my other side and gently poked my wife. "Kelsey. Come on Kels, we gotta go."
A very nervous Kelsey buckled a very drowsy Kevin into his car seat. Oh, I almost forgot. "Happy fifth birthday, buddy." I said, kissing him on the head. I drove for a little while towards the city limits, hoping we could get out that way, but my phone buzzed again and I realized we wouldn't have enough time. Kelsey tapped me on the shoulder and whispered about the airport. I kissed my intelligent wife on the head and made an exit. We get a flight to, uh, where ever, and we would make it.
I walked up to a clearly buzzed ticket lady and eventually bought three tickets on a flight south towards some of Kelsey's relatives. Once essential personal belongings were in suitcases being tagged and shipped to the plane, we were on our way too. I had Kevin in my arms, he was too tired to walk. I didn't blame him, it was almost 5 o'clock in the morning.
By the time we were in our seats, I was getting antsy. I overheard a flight attendant say something about fuel, and then about a revised flight pattern around the bombs, but Kelsey missed it so I didn't say anything. No reason to stress her out more. The plane became more and more crowded with worried people, most of them were clearly family units. I glanced over to check on mine. Kevin was leaning against Kelsey and Kelsey was on my shoulder, both fast asleep. God I love my family.
A few minuets later we were in the air. I mostly stared out the window, or at my wife and son. The falling bombs and their well being was all I cared about. It was really stressful thinking about how related those two things were recently.
About an hour in I heard a faint whistling. at first i thought it was just one of the air vents, but then I saw something streak across the sky towards the ground. In a panic I pressed my face to the glass. There was about three of them, all of them like falling stars destined for the earth.
Then I watched one of them hit the plane wing. The sound was excruciating. It was loud metallic popping and scraping noise, like a hundred car wrecks at once. Gravity appeared out of nowhere. I could no longer tell which side was up. Kevin had slid out of his seat belt somehow. I never saw him again. I made eye contact with my wife one last time before a large suitcase fell and hit her in the head. Blood speckled the seat, but that didn't matter as much as the fact that she died terrified and before her time. Like my son.
I was numb. Everyone else around me was livid with pain and fear or dead but I was numb. So much misery cant be felt all at once. I glanced towards the window. We were nearing the ground, ok. The sunrise was pretty.
I couldn't quite pinpoint when I blacked out, But I knew exactly when I woke up, because I was crying. Weeping. Shaking. My family was gone in an instant. Why was I spared? I heard moaning and looked up. So this is what those things did to people. Those damn bombs and their chemical warfare. making an army of the dead. I was about to attack when I noticed it didn't want me, it wanted Kelsey's corpse. I gagged and climbed over a demolished seat. Then I ran. Vomited. Collapsed and fell out of the plane. Ran some more. eventually I found an abandoned subway station. I closed the door of an empty subway car and blacked out once again. And again. I was restless from the fear, but I was also exhausted and scarred, emotionally and physically. In those meek and limited moments before sleep, I decided two things. I would go on living in my family's place, and it would take an absolute hoard of undead to get me to ever go near that plane again. That evil, goddamn plane.
