I have always been a decent human being; average grades, a few friends, etc. However, throughout the past month, things have taken a turn for the worst. My mother was killed while on a business trip a week ago. She was on her way to the airport where she would board a plane and fly back home to see me. We would be spending some quality mother-daughter time together at this very moment if it hadn't been for the bastard who shot her.

And then there's dad, Ryker Logan, a marine and an overall great man. He's been overseas for four years now so I haven't seen him since eighth grade. He is supposedly coming back home to River Beach to attend my graduation, but I'm not so sure. Truth is, I wouldn't blame him if he stayed in Okinawa. There's more opportunity for him there.

"Haven wake up," Quinn says. "It's almost time for school." Quinn Avery, my girlfriend, has been staying at my place for the past few days since I would otherwise be alone. She is an early riser and is always awake before me. A light sleeper I may be, but somehow she always manages to crawl out of our bed without waking me.

I open my eyes to find Quinn kneeling before me in an oversized t-shirt and sweatpants. "I don't think I can go to school today," I say. "I can't deal with the people there." Ever since my mother passed away, the teachers and students at River Beach High School can't shut up about me. I haven't officially announced that yes, I am the daughter of Stella Logan, the woman who was shot to hell at an airport eight days ago, but people have figured it out.

"Please, Haven. Go for me," she says. "You know I would be there with you if I could." Quinn is one year older than me and is a freshman at Valley University. Valley is right outside River Beach so we see have the privilege of spending time with each other on a daily basis.

"Fine, but you're the only reason why I'm going," I say. I lift myself out of bed and rub the sleep out my eyes. Quinn stands up and wraps her arms around my waist and places soft kisses on my neck.

"I love you so much," she says as she removes her small, delicate hands from my waist and makes her way to the bathroom. I hear the gushing sound of water as she pours me a bath. I smile. My girlfriend has a heart that is as large as the moon and it makes me so happy that I can call her mine.
