The Ride Home

I dribbled the ball up the court. Big Matty came up to guard me, and as he did so, I swung the ball to Jonah Redd, who was wide open. He faked a shot, and I ran straight for the goal, knowing what he would do. Without taking his eyes off the basket, he swung the ball my way in a crazy feat that a normal basketball team couldn't accomplish.

But we were not a normal team.

I caught his pass and made the easy lay up. As I did, Coach CJ blew his whistle. "Ok guys, that's enough. Great teamwork! And Savi, that was awesome." I blushed at his praise. It wasn't just me, I wanted to say, the boys helped. But I was proud.
I grabbed my bag from the locker room and headed out, clutching my prized Spalding ball in my arm. I carried it with me everywhere. On the way out, I said goodbye to the team. As I reached the door, my text alert went off. It was Mom

Hey Sweetie,
Got a new rescue. I'm afraid to leave her alone. She is a timid one! See if Coach can drive you, but if not dad can pick you up in about 15 minutes.

Coach said he could take me home. I threw my stuff into the back of his green Subaru and climbed in the front seat to wait on him. As I did, I watched the team leave. There were 10 of us; me, Jonah, Toby, Big Matty, Mario, Roger, Danny, Cris, Reggie, and Zane. They are all boys, after all, I play on the boys team. Our school doesn't have a girls team for some unknown reason. Then I thought about the rescue. My family rescues dogs, and on most days I come home to find a new dog sitting on the couch or running around in the backyard. Luckily, our dogs get adopted pretty quickly. It's because of this and the fact that my dad is a brain surgeon that we are rich. I don't like to talk about it, because I sound like I'm boasting. I hate people who boast all the time, even if all they have to boast about is that they managed to make a layup. Whatever. Anyone can do that.
Coach came to the car a few minutes later. We drove home under dark cloudy skies. "Looks like a storms coming!" Coach muttered. It wasn't a surprise. There was a storm brewing in the ocean. It wasn't supposed to come in until tomorrow afternoon. Nobody really cared, though, because it was only a little tropical storm, and most people have more important things on their mind.
The ride home only took about 5 minutes. As coach pulled up, my mom came outside to thank him. On a leash beside her was a white and brown pit bull that I had never seen before. It must have been the new dog. Mom seemed rather tired. "This pup is so panicky it's a wonder she's not scared of her own shadow!" she joked. I climbed out of Coach's car, thanked him, and went inside.
