From dusk till dawn
The roaring sounds of the Summer's first storm echoed above the city of Chicago. Thunder shook the sky and rain started to splatter against the windows. The wind began howling in between the city's many skyscrapers, the random honking of car horns by frustrated commuters echoed throughout the streets, that instantly recognizable scent of rain filled the air overpowering any and all other smells, and the cone of light that headlights make illuminated the streets. To Anna, the college junior studying history as her major, she got her love for history from her mother, at MacCormac, this was the best day of the Summer or even the year. To her; the thunderstorms made the Windy City feel more alive than it usually is. She looked over into the dining area, as it was about ten feet of space. for nothing more than a table and two chairs, to the clock that was nailed into the wall by a disgruntled past tennent, which read: 10:03. "Ugh", she muttered to herself, "time to get him up." Him was her friend and roommate as she always called it, but, the truth is more convoluted than that. He was responsible for saving her life, her grades, and her apartment more than once. He showed up during Anna's Freshmen year of college, battered and bruised from an apparent attack by some low-life inner city scum who only wanted to rob him of a couple dollars and then bail, but, instead adding the idea to beat him senseless with a baseball bat when he handed over the cash. That's just what the official police report says. Anna went into his room which was right next to hers, and looked inside...Only to find all of bedding was on the floor, the bed was dragged across the room to get to the window, which was next to said bed, that led to the fire escape. "Great, he's on the roof again, least he's up." She said to herself as she slammed the door shut. 'That stupid Dragon. Hybrid. Thing.' She thought to herself. Anna stared at herself in the mirror that was in her room as the door was left open. Her chestnut hair was in a mess, her blue-gray eyes, which attracted many people of both sexes to her, looked dull and were losing their vibrant glow. "It's not him." She said softly to herself. She had to remind herself that Zarekin, her roommate, was not human at times. He is a Ninrexian, a hybrid species of Dragon and Androm, some kind of Human-esque beings according to him, and is one of the last ones even alive. He's also old: 16,789 years to be exact but, doesn't act like. He said it's because he was gifted by his Gods to live for an extended period of time, however, he can't truly age in body or mind, is how he explains it, and he doesn't look it either; his skin, where there isn't scales, only his forearms, hands, neck and head are scale-free, isn't wrinkly or saggy at all, his eyes, although the eyes of a Dragon, are bright and still hold their amber color, same with his ebony hair, his youthful voice. Anna, of course being the sensible person, didn't believe him until she saw his tail and wings. Zarekin's wings, which are around seven feet in width, are usually folded up and covered with a shirt, but, the long scaly four foot tail can't be hidden, so going outside is a problem for him. Anna found his tail to be rather cute. She didn't understand why she felt this way, she just does. Loud banging shook the outside of the apartment as Zarekin climbed back inside through the window. "Good morning, sweetheart." he said to her, Zarekin often called her sweetheart. Anna, exceptionally annoyed with the Dragon, turned to face him, but, her annoyance with him was instantly washed away at the mere sight of him. Zarekin stood a little under six feet tall, just a few inches taller than Anna. His appearance could be best described as; young, vibrant and a little bit feminine. Anna said he looked like a real life Anime character when she first met him. "Hey," he started, "you okay?"
"Yeah," Anna responded, flopping herself on the black leather couch in the living room, "just stressed. No trench coat today? Just a black shirt and shorts?"
"No coat, it's in the wash at the moment." He said, sitting next to her. Zarekin often wore a long slate grey trench coat with black jeans and boots. Not only did it blend in with the people around, the coat also was great at somewhat covering his tail. The T.V was turned on to the local news which was unusual because neither of them really care for the T.V and are usually watching whatever Anna finds on Netflix that isn't completely boring. However, today was different, a breaking news report was being flashed upon the eighteen inch screen. The anchorman started to speak with fire in his voice: "This just in, a military base in Iraq has been attacked by an unknown terrorist group. Officials in the Army are staying silent, saying that they will release more information as time goes on. So far all we know is that there are no survivors. In other news, a local-" Zarekin shut the T.V. off. "Can...We watch something else...please?" He asked, his voice was hushed and shaky. Anna looked at him with worry. "It's okay, what's wrong?" She smiled at him. "It's just, that I...I hate hearing about people dying. I've seen too much-" He started up. "It's okay," she cut him off, trying to comfort him, "just don't think about it." Zarekin nodded and turned the T.V back on, "just put it on Netflix," he said, "I need to forget about that." Anna nodded and turned on the Playstation 4 that he had got her. 'Somethings not right. He's never like this even when it's about war.' She thought to herself.
