I have recently became a cosplayer and watched a video about a cosplayer talking bout this ^ and looked at the comments. A lot of them were good and made sense, but the one below hit me most. Thank you. (I will put the link to the video in the comments.)
ChaoticGoddess(Youtube): "I remember the first year I went to New York Comic Con I was so excited for the following year because I had an amazing time. I looked over in the comments on the main page and I was disgusted by this woman's comment. She told a story about how she was cosplaying as mary jane in a wedding dress, and she was on the chubbier side, also her costume was bought, contrary to her boyfriend who was cosplaying in a hand made spiderman costume. She went to some booth where she and her boyfriend were looking and shopping around for stuff, and the SHOP OWNER started attacking her saying that she doesn't deserve the man that she was with and how she looks like sh**. I was appalled to believe that not just a con goer, but a person who was there for BUSINESS did this.
"On a side note: I agree with everyone here, especially "Luna Teec". People expect when they go to conventions, they'll see these pictures online of attractive, skinny, big breasted women, pulling off skinny, attractive, big breasted women. Then when they see women who don't look perfect, with professional make-up, with a perfect body, they start freaking out.
"I've seen both cosplayers and non cosplayers criticize cosplayers. And honestly, when it comes down to it, at the very basis, it's a deeper halloween without the trick or treating and on a different date. If you saw the same person on halloween going around in their costume, you'd just think, oh that costume is awesome. Not, oh that person is too fat for that character.
"Don't get me wrong, i hate the people who don't cosplay, never tried to make a cosplay, never even attempted it, go up to someone and bash them for either their costume, or how they wear it, because the amount of CONFIDENCE it takes to wear a costume, and to go out there and be possibly judged and know your face might be somewhere on the internet later, takes a hell of a lot more confidence than going up to someone and nit picking at them.
"On the other side. I hate the cosplayers who do it too, because it sets a bad community for the cosplay community, and when it comes down to it, we're all there to celebrate our fandoms. There's no reason to have so much hate just because some women don't have the "ideal image". If you have it, that's amazing for you, congratulations, you won the genetic raffle. If you don't? Do what you love. Do what makes YOU happy. And do what I do if people are mean, if they're a butt, punch them in the butt c:"
