I hate school. Whoever came up with the idea was an idiot. I'm the kid everybody picks on. I'm most likely going to be kicked, punched, spat on, and have my lunch thrown in the dirt. Sometimes, even my face ends up in the dirt. The kids at Middle Coast High despise me, for no apparent reason. Maybe it's because I'm not as strong as the other guys. Or it's my stupid face and my unruly hair that refuses to be combed. Whatever the reason is, they all hate me. And I don't blame them for it, sometimes I hate me too. I mean, who would want to be friends with Garfield Gillensky, the biggest loser in Middle Coast? Otherwise known as Gigi. It's embarrassing enough that they named me after a girl model.
"C'mon Garth, you're late." My Mom opened the car door to let me out. She doesn't know. She doesn't know that when I walk through those doors, it's hell. She has no clue how the other students treat me because I never tell her. She worries a lot. The last thing I want is my mom fussing over me. She already has other things to worry about. Like keeping her job and supporting the both of us.
"Do I have to go?" I whined. I know I sounded like a kid, but right now, I'll do anything to get out of going to school. It was Monday. On Mondays, we have gym. And in gym, I'm everybody's favorite punching bag. "Why can't I go to work with you?"
Mom gave me a sympathetic smile. "Garth, I can't allow that. Now hurry."
I heaved a heavy sigh and got out of the car, feeling miserable.
"Garth, cheer up. Tell you what? "She poked her head out the window, her red hair glistened in the sun. " Tomorrow, after school, we could go out together. Maybe see a movie. Go to the beach. Wouldn't that be nice?"
I shrugged. "I guess." I mumbled.
Mom frowned at me. "Garth, I'm trying-"
The school bell rang, interrupting her.
"I gotta go," I slung my bag over my shoulders. To be honest, I was glad the bell rang. I didn't want to get into another one of those arguments with my Momwhere she's giving me the googly eyes and telling me she loves me and she'strying to reach out to me. Blah, blah, blah. It's not that I don't love my Mom, but sometimes I feel smothered; she worries about me too much.
"Have fun," Mom waved at me then drove off.
Have fun? In a school like this? Thin chance if you ask me.
I was relieved to see I wasn't late for my first period, which was chemistry, one of my favorite subjects. The only thing that made it bad was my partner, Reese Williams.
"Garth, over here!" she waved wildly at me, almost as if she wanted the whole class to hear. Today she wore a Bright yellow Got Milk? T-shirt over blue jeans. She was weird. Like those typical hippie girls who love nature too much and quote a lot of philosophy mumbo jumbo. But she was the only person in the school who treats me with respect and doesn't call me Gigi.
"Hey," I greeted her as I reached the table. Her bushy brown hair was caught in a ponytail, and she wore her goggles, even though the class hasn't started yet.
"Hi." She smiled, revealing multi-coloured braces. "You look upset? Did you get in another fight with your Mom again?"
Before I could respond she blabbered on, asking more random questions.
"Don't you think it's funny we both wore yellow today? Is yellow your favorite colour? Mine is Red. Have you ever considered a new look? Maybe dye your hair purple...or maybe even yellow. That would be cool. I never have seen yellow hair before. You know what? I think yellow is my favorite colour now. It reminds me of the sun-"
