Chapter 2
Silent Prey
So there we were, standing in a battle field in Japan, while the enemy was right around the corner. My best mate I met here is Tom Pabent, he started to loose it when he heard the Japanese soldiers coming. I tried to calm him down but he wouldn’t listen to me. It was difficult to convince him to be quiet, all I had to say was “we could die here” and he immediately went silent and didn’t move a muscle. He was a funny and kind sort of guy. He had a family and was having a great time looking after his 3 year old daughter and 1 year old son. He was happily married and was living a beautiful life until the war started. He said to his family that he would go to war and help his country as much as possible and hope to come back alive. So there he left his wife and 2 kids to go to war while at home they were waiting for him to walk through the front door.
He was upset when we were out in the battle field because he kept thinking that he had no life, no purpose and no meaning in the world. Usually I could make change his mood pretty quick, but today he was a loose cannon, exploding at my words. He kept saying “I wish I didn’t come here”. These are the words of a master at gun shooting, aiming, camouflaging and defending his turf, only today did he sound like a scared school boy hiding in the corner of the classroom.
He was shaking because of the freezing temperature of the wind which was constantly whipping his face like a leather glove. Everyone felt sorry for him, but now was not the time to complain, we were staring death in the face. As we swiftly moved against the wall, we all heard something.
We heard the voice of Japanese yelling at his fellow soldiers we looked at each other and knew what we had to do, go out in the wide open and just shoot for our lives. So that’s exactly what we did. I cocked my gun and jumped out from behind the wall and yelled out with hate in my voice “THIS IS FOR AUSTRALIA!”
Knowing the Japanese heard me I shot as many soldiers as I could before they got their guns ready. We had to fight to survive, and that’s exactly what we did.
