It's not until after lunch in math class when I look out the window and see the blue light flicker in the distance. I squint and see the blue light is coming from the alley across the street from the school. I raise my hand.
"Yes, Abby?" My math teacher, Mr. Leggy says.
"May I please be excused for a moment?" I say, politely.
"Yes, you may." Mr Leggy says and turns back to the class, "Now, turn to page 251 in your textbooks please."
I grab a hall pass and exit the classroom. I shut the door behind me and go down the stairs. I head out the front doors of the school. I turn right and head across the street to the alley that had the blue glow in it. I jog over to the alley and slow to a walk when I see what's in the alley.
A small, delicate creature is flapping around in a metal cage, trying to get out. I walk over the blue creature. It flaps its wings furiously up to the top of the cage and tries to get out, but the creature slowly drifts back down to the bottom of the cage like it gave up. The creature looks at me with sad eyes as if saying "Help me."
"You poor thing," I say, "Let me help you."I walk to the cage and place my hand on the handle. I pull up on the handle......nothing happens. I look at the handle. It has a lock on it. I look closer, the lock doesn't have a hole for a key, instead it has a picture of a blue water drop on it. "I don't understand....why is there a water drop on the lock?" I say, puzzled.
I look at the creature, who, is pointing to a watering can in the corner of the alley. "You want me to give you water?" I ask the creature. The creature shakes its head and points to the lock, then points to the watering can. I go over to the watering can, pick it up, and turn and walk back to the creature. I set the watering can down right next to the cage on a brown box. "I still don't understand on what you want me to do." I lean on the box that I put the watering can on. "What am I going to do?" I sigh.
Suddenly, the watering can starts tipping over and starts to fall off the box. "Oh no!" I shout. the watering can tips over and falls off the box. "No!" I shout. The watering can lands on its side next to the cage, and the water from the watering can spills out of the spout and pours over the lock. Then the lock disappears and the cage automatically opens. "Woah." I say, my eyes widen. The creature flies out and comes over to me. The creature has dark blue wings and a pretty blue, frilly dress. "Your.....," I say, amazed, "you're a fairy!"
The fairy nods and flies a little bit up and starts spinning around. Blue sparks and swirls start flying out of the fairy as it spins faster and faster until a flash of light blinds me and I tumble to the ground. I hold my hand over my head to shield my eyes from the light. Once the light clears, there, standing before me, is a beautiful human fairy with beautiful blue wings, brown, silky hair, and a beautiful blue silk dress. The fairy smiles at me.
"Thank you, Abliqua." She says.
I turn around, then turn back to her and point to myself.
"What? Are you talking to me?" I say and the fairy laughs.
"Oh Abliqua! You've always had that sense of humor!" She laughs, "Come, we must go to Cothia and bring you back to the king!" The fairy grabs my wrist
"WAIT!" I shout, "I'm not Abliqua! I'm Abby!" I try to yank my wrist free, but the fairy has a strong grip on me.
"What are you talking about?" she says. "Only Abliqua can actually unlock a water drop lock with water!"
"But....." I start, but the fairy interrupts me.
"Come, we must go to Cothia, the kingdom needs your help!"
She grips my wrist harder and snaps her fingers. At once, swirls and sparks of blue start to circle around us. The fairy snaps her fingers again and we magically disappear into thin air. I'm going to Cothia, whether I like it or not.
