I awoke to the blinding sun begging me to awake. I rose and stretched. I looked at the time and rolled my eyes. Everyday was the same, and I was bored of it.
Today's Saturday and I don't have school. I glanced at my calendar like I do every morning. Oh. I forgot today is New Years Day, and yesterday was the last day of 665. The year changed, but not my life. I wanted something to happen. I jumped out of bed and got ready to do my morning jog. "Good morning, honey. Good year so far?" My mother smiled as she poured me a glass of milk with toast. "Thanks mom, and ya." I wolfed down my food and put my shoes on. "Be careful, Hari." My mother calls out to me as I shut the door. I laughed, as there were never any dangers in Evertown. I passed by my school and ignored the stressful bold letters that read 'Evertown Middle School.' Seeing those words makes me cringe. It reminds me of homework and stress. My mother, my only family member, cared about me and loved me. She keeps up with my crazy morning routine even though she is not a morning person like me. And that's something I love about my mother. Being a mother like a mother should be.
I ran a few laps around the school and shook my sweat off when I was done. My mile time decreased by 2 minutes over the past 6 weeks, and I felt accomplished every time I run in the mornings. It was quiet. Of course, no one in town is up at 5:00 am.
I ran back home with sweat dripping from my head, and the door opened, with my beautiful mother smiling and holding a plate of cookies for me. My mother is the best human in the universe. Even after my dad left her, she continued to live a stress-free life, focusing on caring for me. And she's gorgeous. Her eyes are the color of sunlight peeking through green leaves, and her smile was always there. Her freckles are perfectly placed on her face, and her light amber hair frames her face beautifully. I got some of her traits, like her hair and light freckles. I'm thankful she is my mother.
I sat at the dining table and gazed at my mother. She smiled at me and prepared a proper breakfast. I looked out the window next to her. The road was starting to fill up. I then remember the one time that my mother telling me a story how people started to hurt the world, how they cut down more than 90% of the trees in the world and people made machines that create carbon dioxide. This also lead to global warming which was spreading across the world really fast. When that started to happen, they decided to re-start the number of days to see how long humanity has left. This also reminded me of this weird feeling I'd always have. I felt... homesick...
My mother walked back to the table with more food, and brought milk for the cookies. I thanked her and started to eat. My table shook. My mom was at the kitchen, and she had fallen down. My table shook again, but this time there was a bigger thump. My mom yelled at me, "EARTHQUAKE!" This was the first time in over 666 years now. My mom screamed as glass shattered and landed around us. I counted down, "please stop... Please stop... 10... 9...." I continued and begged. "3... 2.... 1..." The earthquake ended. My mom screamed. "GLASS!" I could hear more people screaming outside. Babies crying, people yelling and panicking. I stood up and noticed my milk has spilled across the floor, but I managed to keep myself on the chair.
I ran to my mother. "Are you okay?" She only breathed heavily and stared at her wound with wide eyes. I crouched beside her and carefully set my fingers onto the large blade of glass that had sunk so deeply inside my mother's skin. I pulled it out a centimeter of it, and my mom breathed heavier. "Mom, you'll be alright. Just let me take the whole thing out." Once again I pulled it out, but this time I did it quick. I pulled the whole thing out, and my mother winced at the pain. A trail of blood followed the glass in the air, and I tossed it into the garbage can. I ran to the living room to get bandages and immediately stuck them to my mom's stomatch. I examined the blood, and I knew something was wrong. The shard had hit her vain, one of the most critical ways to die from loss of blood. I got the phone to call the police, knowing she can die in minutes if she was left like this.
Your call has been forwarded to an automatic voice message. Please cli- I put my phone down. I had called everyone, the hospital, my friends, my family. No one answered. I panicked as I saw my mom in pain, bleeding through her bandaid. Then, I noticed her blood forming into a shape. There were 4 circles that made a square and between the circles, small ovals formed. Curiously, I approached it and it started changing colors. I touched her blood, and it went up my hand. My left hand started to get a mark, the same mark that the blood on the ground had made. I screamed in pain and fainted.
This is The Day the Earth Shook.
This was the start of the end.
