"Well, that's everything." Said my mother as she grabbed my last suitcase from the counter and handed it to me. I glanced up and saw a stream of tears flowing from her eyes. I brushed her long tossled brown hair from her face and whiped the tears from her eyes.
"I'll call you every night. I promise." I muttered, holding back tears as she pulled me into her arms and gave me one last hug before we left. "I'm going to miss you so much."
"We better go, darling. If we leave any later you'll miss your flight." I looked up into her big brown eyes and saw so much pain. I can't do it. I can't leave her here alone. "I'll be okay." She said, as if she knew exactly what I was thinking. My mother and I had that wonderful yet annoying mother-daughter telepathy that everyone talks about in movies. We knew eachother so well that we could know exactly what one another was feeling or thinking without even saying a single word.
We headed up the stairs, arm in arm, as we walked up to my room to get the last of my belongings. We made our way into my almost empty room, which still had all of my disney posters on the wall, and sat on the bed. I took one good look at my room. As I looked around at the picture frames, posters, and markings on the wall, a flood of memories rushed back to me. This was the room where so much of my life happened. 22 years in this room and today was my last time being in it.
"So where do you want me to put these" Asked my mother, beginning to take the pictures off the wall.
I looked up and saw picture frames filled with pictures of my friends, family, and love of my life. I reflected on all of the pain, hurt, and betrayal I had faced here in this room and I suddenly felt a rush of adrenaline. This really was my chance to escape my life here in AppleWood. This was my chance to be happy.
This is my chance to forget.
"Actually, I'm just gonna leave these pictures here. You can throw them away if you want. It's time to say goodbye to this life." My mother grabbed my hand and we walked through the doors of my childhood house together one last time. I walked forward and into the car, not looking back once.
This is my chance.
