English class was one of the best classes she had been to the whole morning. And it wasn't because the class itself was eventful. No. She and Logan were endlessly passing notes, laughing about what Ms. Farron was saying.
After class, they each went their own ways; Logan to Chemistry, Stacie to Algebra. But not before they exchanged phone numbers. Logan texted her a smiley face when he got it. He put 'Stacie💨' as a joke because New Jersey is always cold. Well, that's what he thought. Turned out he had never been anywhere apart from California, this town.
Stacie walked with a skip on her step. Algebra is one of her best subjects. Nothing could go wrong with her when it's Algebra. Call her a nerd or whatever, but she's a very smart girl, even though she rarely shows it.
When she got to class, she took a seat in the middle row, beside the window overlooking the garden at the front of the school. Unlike Ms. Farron, Ms. Remington arrived early. Stacie looked around the room, most of the seats were taken. She counted five vacant seats, including the one beside her. That is, when a brown haired girl walked in consuming the seat beside Stacie. Brunette was wearing a red skirt and a blue top with a cardigan draped across her shoulders and beige boots to complete the outfit. She was outrageously pretty.
Brunette smiled at her warmly, extending a hand for Stacie to shake. "Hi, I'm Jennifer, or Jenny for short. You must be Stacie Ferguson!" Her brown doe eyes stared back at Stacie's own green ones, as if searching for her soul.
Stacie took Jennifer's (or Jenny's) hand tentatively, hesitance clear on her face. She didn't exactly know how to deal with hyper girls. She smiled, nevertheless. She didn't want to look strict. Besides, Jenny looked nice. She didn't seem like the stereotypical mean girl you would happen to come upon. Stacie could see that Jenny was genuinely happy and Stacie happened to be appreciate those. One of the reasons that she introduced herself formally.
"Okay, class. SHUT UP AND LISTEN, YOU OBNOXIOUS LITTLE BRATS!" Ms. Remington yelled, since the class wasn't listening. Throughout the conversation with Jenny, Stacie didn't notice the vacant seats around the classroom occupied. Class was about to start.
"YOU BETTER LISTEN UP NOW. WE HAVE A NEW STUDENT. Her name is Stacie." Ms. Remington searched the room and her eyes fell on her. "Stacie, would you like to introduce yourself?"
Huh, Ms. Farron didn't make me introduce myself, she thought as she stood up. "I'm Stacie Ferguson. I'm from New Jersey. I like eating."
"Ha! Then you're going to have a hard time at the cafeteria!" A boy from the back said. His voice was annoying so Stacie chose to ignore it.
Ms. Remington told Stacie to sit down and then started teaching class. Stacie took out her blue notebook and started taking down notes when she felt a pen tap her on her back. She turned around to come face-to-face with a red-haired guy with a splash of freckles on his nose and tinted glasses that was dangling on his nose.
"Um... hi, Stacie. Do you understand the fundamental theorem? I'm totally lost." He said in a squeaky voice. She noticed a blush slowly creeping its way to his cheeks. Stacie almost chuckled. He was blushing because of her? So adorable.
"Well, the fundamental theorem in algebra states that every non-constant single-variable has at least one complex." Stacie explained. "This includes polynomials with real coefficients, since every real number is a complex number with an equal to zero." She continued when she saw the red headed boy's eyebrows furrow. "So yeah. That's what it is." When she saw Red Head's worried gaze she quickly said,"Good luck," with a smile.
She turned back to the board and ignored the fact that Jennifer was gawking at her in shock. She's already used to those stares.
~~~~~~~~~~
The minute the lunch bell echoed throughout the Chemistry lab, the students shouted in glee.
"Now, remember, class. Page 23 of your textbooks. Memorize the formula." The teacher called, before sighing at the scene in front of her.
Students were pushing and shoving each other either away or towards the door. It was mayhem.
Stacie could feel sweat starting to develop on her forehead. What the hell? Were these students in a school or apes in the jungle?
She turned to look at her Science teacher, "Are they always like this?"
She chuckled in response to the question she always gets from new students, "Unfortunately so." She kept her eyes glued to the door then yelled,"If that door breaks, I will personally send each one of you down to the ground!"
That one is such a sweet teacher .
Finally, after a huge amount of stress, they got out and headed to the canteen.
This is one of the moments Stacie most dreaded. Where will she sit? Are the students nice in the cafeteria? Is there a food fight daily? Luckily she got her answer on the first question the second she got her food.
"Yo, STACIE! PAGING STACIE FERGUSON!" Her eyes darted over to see who was screaming her name, and her eyes landed on a small circular table filled with five students totally.
Reluctantly, she headed to the said table, keeping her eyes on the two only people she knew sitting there.
"Um, Jenny, right?" Stacie said stupidly. She gave herself a mental slap on that one. Smart, Stacie, smart.
Jenny twisted her head 360°, which was unnerving too her and the rest of the people on the table. Stacie was surprised she didn't get whiplash.
Jenny groaned.
Spoke too soon.
"Sup, Stacie?" Logan waved and she sat over beside him. "Let me introduce you to the gang."
He pointed to Jenny, "You know her, since I told her about you. So... moving on, that guy over there," he pointed to a guy with circular glasses which made his almond eyes pop,"His name is Eric."
Eric had flaming red hair and a splash of freckles on his nose. He smiled crookedly at Stacie then awkwardly waved. She waved back.
"...that girl over there, beside Eric, is Sandra," Logan continued.
Ironically, Sandra has sandy hair with bright blue eyes and a soft smile firmly planted on her lips. Stereotypes ran through my mind, but Stacie pushed them away. Judging from her calm composure and straight posture, she seemed like a nice girl.
Next introduced to her was a burly man named David. He towered over her when he stood up to shake her hand. He had chocolate hair and big green eyes. He smiled, nervous. Huh, not a usual expression on a burly man.
"...that is all." Logan said, finally down with the introductions.
Sandra smiled at her, "Can I come over to your house after school today? I think you're in my chemistry class, and I have no idea what Ms. Kathy said." She giggled softly.
"Sure thing, um, Sandra," Stacie said, momentarily forgetting her name.
"She is majorly smart." Jenny said, boosting Stacie's ego. I rolled my eyes. "Am not."
Jenny chuckled then winked,"Don't deny it."
The table laughed.
This is a family. For some reason, Stacie has become a part of it.
