Chapter 2
The child in Steins arms seems as if she wants to protest from time to time, though she never actually does. Stein looks straight ahead, with a seemingly emotionless expression as he carries her, though his mind races with thoughts. Why had he taken her? It wasn't like him to do such a thing...
When he looks back down at her, she is sleeping, probably from everything that's happened and then some. He sighs, still carrying her along.
It isn't too long before they reach his home, his lonely home. Opening the door wakes the child, her eyes drooping. Once inside, he sets her on a table gently, looking her over. "You'll need some treatment..." He says quietly. She instantly is awake, shaking with fear again. "T-Tests?" She stammers, horror in her eyes. He shakes his head, pulling out some supplies. "No. Just cleaning and bandaging..." She blinks at him, still tense. Wiping off her wounds, he shows no emotion toward her whatsoever. She's surprised it doesn't hurt, and very slowly starts to relax a little more. "So kid...what's your name?" He asks as he bandages up a wound. "My...name? Well..." She looks down, a look of shame and sadness on her face. Stein pauses his work, looking at her as if waiting for an answer. "...my name is only a number..." Stein seems to wait a moment before he continues his task. They both stay silent as he cleans her last wound, and soon he sits up again. "You're all set." He murmurs, looking at her. He was considering what to do with this child... He hadn't wanted the police to take her, they would have just furthered her traumatization. He figured he could help her painlessly, which he just did, but now what... "I suppose you'll stay here until I can find you a proper home." He says simply, still watching her carefully. She blinks, nodding after a moment. "Yes sir..." She agrees, a small shiver coming out of her. Stein waits a moment before taking off his lab coat and placing it on her. "Just call me professor." He says as he picks her up. Her eyes widen at the gesture, yet she doesn't protest this time when he lifts her up. "Now it's time for you to sleep. I'll take a few days off of work to gain your trust, and then you'll have to come with me..." He explains as he sets her in a separate room. She nods, getting under the covers. "Y-Yes professor..." She whispers, looking at him. Stein sighs to himself, wondering if he was making the right choice. What an odd child... She had short black hair and multicolored eyes. One blue, and one purple, both works of the testing she had been through. "Okay...goodnight." He says before walking out, leaving the door open a crack. She watches him walk out, closing her eyes after a moment. However, after only a few hours she wakes up, being too afraid to fall back asleep. She sits in wonder for a moment, debating what she should do. Would he get upset? Or would he be nice? After a moment of laying in tears, she decides to take the risk and find him. When she can't find him in his bedroom, she ends up wandering to find him at a desk, working on something. "Uhm... Professor?" She calls out quietly, watching his reaction. Hearing the voice of the child, he turns his head to her with a little surprise. "...yes?" She looks at her feet a moment, then turns away. "N-Nevermind..." She murmurs, about to walk out. Stein gets up, picking her up as well. "Don't try to lie to me. I can see just how upset you are." He says, not looking angry at all. He pauses a moment, holding the child. A small smirk comes across his face as he looks at her. "... Besides. I think it's probably time for both of us to get some sleep." She wasn't expecting the smile from him, nor was she expecting it to hold such a kind emotion. She nods, allowing him to carry her into his room, where he lays her next to him, still wearing his coat. "G-Goodnight, professor..." She stammers nervously, closing her eyes. "Good night, kid." He replies before drifting off to sleep himself.
