Another piercing scream ripped through the air. Then another, and another, and another, until they fused into a horrifying chorus, an apocalyptic symphony.
Jaden ran towards the front door of the pokécenter, followed by Kaylee, Bonnie, and eventually the nurse. As the sliding doors opened, they witnessed the small pleasant town of Verdanturf being stripped of all its innocence: a horrible aroma of blood and death filled the air, the quiet broken by the terrified screams of people and they're pokemon alike. The infected pokémon rampaged through the town, attacking and biting the townspeople and other pokémon. Children ran outside, screaming as their parents tried to protect them. A lone boy stood motionless in front of his house, seemingly frozen in horror.
Jaden began to shake, his fists clenched. "No." He said to himself loudly, "Not again, I WON'T LET THIS HAPPEN AGAIN!" He bolted out the door and into the madness.
"Jaden wait!" She yelled after him, "your gonna get yourself killed!" Jaden let the screams drown out her voice. He stubbornly sprinted in the direction of the lone boy, both of them somehow unnoticed by other infected pokémon. He felt thankful for their preoccupation with other people at the moment, and then condemned himself for thinking such a terrible and selfish thought.
"Hey!" He yelled in the direction of the boy, while still keeping an eye on his surroundings. The boy turned his head towards Jaden, his pale green hair shifting slightly in the wind. Tears ran down his face. His faded blue polo shirt and white pants had traces of blood on them, though it didn't seem to be his; the blood was splattered, not soaked.
Jaden grabbed him by the arm, "Come on, we have to go!" He began to pull the boy in the other direction, but he resisted. He still jerked forward, as he didn't seem to be very strong. His eyes grew wider, and he pulled away from Jaden's grip. "Hey," Jaden started, almost annoyed at the boy's resilience, "we have to-" He stopped mid sentence. The boy pointed behind Jaden, his eyes enlarged with fear. Jaden turned slowly, eyes first, followed by his head, then his body. In front of him stood a bloodied mightyena, eyes replaced with glossy white orbs, and teeth reared. Diagonally from Jaden and the boy stood a cacturne, who must have belonged to a resident, seeing as they weren't near the desert. They edged nearer, Jaden edging further back with every step as to keep a safe distance. The boy walked backwards slowly as well, though uneasily.
"Try to stay calm" Jaden whispered slowly, his voice and body trembling slightly. The boy took another step backwards and caught his foot on a rock, tripping backwards into a muddy bed of flowers. The mightyena suddenly sprang towards Jaden, aiming directly for his throat. Jaden raised his arms in defense, unable to think of any other possible way to protect himself. Blaziken appeared in a flash of red and white, seizing the airborne mightyena by the throat. He planted its feet firmly in the ground, transferring his momentum into his arms, launching the mightyena into the nearby cacturne. The mightyena yelped as they tumbled to the ground, the cacturne's spikes digging into its flesh.
Jaden turned quickly and grabbed the boy's arm again, helping him off the ground. "Thanks," the boy said quietly, eyes pointed towards the ground.
"Thank Blazi-" Jaden had begun to say until he felt a jolt from behind. Blaziken latched his left hand to Jaden's backpack, and his other to the back of the boy's soiled shirt. He turned and sprinted towards a small cave entrance located on the edge of the town, carrying the boys in each arm. The boy looked absolutely frightened and confused, as if he wasn't already before. The screams of the innocent still filled the air, though seemingly less due to the decrease in living people. As he rode under Blaziken's arm, Jaden saw walking corpses, people and pokemon alike, turn their attention towards a screaming lady holding a weeping infant, huddled in between two houses.
"Blaziken," he yelled, "stop! We have to help them!" Blaziken's speed remained unchanged. The infected inched closer towards the woman and her child. "PLEASE STOP!" He yelled, pulling on Blaziken's arm to no success, "YOU HAVE TO STOP! I CAN'T LET THEM DIE!" the infants feeble cry began to fade as they gained more distance. "PLEASE!" He screamed helplessly, his face soaked with tears, "I DON'T WANT ANYONE ELSE TO DIE!" He flailed and writhed hopelessly. "STOOOOOP!" He pleaded, "you don't understand... It's only... a baby..." His voice faded. He could no longer see them through his tears. He didn't want to.
Blaziken entered the cave, where Kaylee and the nurse stood, eyes sunken from witnessing such numerous horrors. He dropped Jaden and the boy, and immediately Jaden attempted to run back out. Kaylee grabbed his shoulder to stop him, but on contact he stopped on his own. He stood facing the outside. The screaming had stopped, and all was quiet.
Kaylee's camerupt stood behind her, out of its pokéball. "Camerupt," she said emotionlessly, "close the cave door. Please." She added. Camerupt headed towards the entrance and began to stomp it's feet on the rocky cave floor, causing a miniature earthquake. Jaden allowed the shaking ground to buckle him down to the ground, where he sat motionlessly. Everyone kept their balance steady, except for the boy, who began to stumble and toppled onto the ground, landing on his elbows. Boulders began to fall from above the cave entrance, covering the opening. The rumbling caught the attention of the infected, but the entrance sealed itself before they could make their way towards it. Darkness engulfed the hidden survivors.================================
