A Long Drive

I was a smart kid when I was 4. I knew words that I would have learnt when I was 9-11 years old. I could talk like a 10 year old. But, I didn't know what a word really meant when dad told me cancer meant vacation. But I knew it meant something else.

We should go," dad said quickly. Picking me up and guiding the doctor to his car. "Now."

"I hope you get all the help you can. Good luck." The doctor replies sadly.

Dad thanks the doctor and closes the door, "Stay with me Samira."

I fell asleep after he started driving and darkness is all I saw.

*-*-*-*

I woke up startled. Dad was standing outside pumping gas into the car. He notices me and smiles, opening the door.

"Good morning, are you hungry?" He asks me.

I nod, still groggy from sleeping. I look around me, noticing we are in a forest. There was green everywhere! The road and the gas station were the only thing not green or brown.

"I will go get us some food. Can you lock the door?" He asks me.

"Yeah" I say, yawning in the process.

"Unlock the door when you see me coming, okay?" He says to me. I nod.

I lock the door after he closes the door. He walks away from the car, walking into the gas station. I sigh, watching him through the windows.

After a couple of minutes, he walks out with bags of food. I unlocked the door for him and he sits in the seat next to me.

"Hungry?" He cheers, opening the bags.

The entire car smelt of burgers and fries, making me smile.

"I will take that as a yes." He exclaims, his smile spreading from ear to ear.

He takes out two burgers and fries and places them on a paper plate, carefully placing the plate on my lap. As soon as the plate touched my leg, heat spread on my lap.

*-*-*-*

The food was delicious and dad is jumping into the front seat, starting the car. He starts to drive and I watch the scenery outside.

Hours fly by as we change from forest to farm to forest. We finally come upon a city in a huge plain. It was like home but a little bigger.

"Welcome to your new home Samira." He says to me as I doze off.
