Chapter 1: Vacation

Clary waited nervously in a diner booth at Taki’s. Her hands fidgeted with her stele and she kept glancing down at her menu. It didn’t help when Kaelie went to her table and asked if she was waiting for someone. Clary bit her lip to hold back a retort.

“Yes” She said glaring at the faery. “I am.” Kaelie would just shrug her slim shoulders and go off to wait at another table as if she couldn’t care less about Clary’s personal life. Which, Clary thought, probably is true.

Just when she was about to call him on his cell, Jace sauntered into the restaurant like he had all the time in the world. His beautiful, angular face was bloody and his golden hair stuck up at odd angles that called out for clary to smooth it out. He scanned the room looking for her and met her gaze. Waving away Kaelie’s attempt of making conversation he slid into the booth beside her and smiled making her heart thump faster in her chest. She gazed at the boy she loved and while he was about to say something sweet, sarcastic or both, she cut him off.

“Where the hell have you been?” She asked incredulously. He looked taken aback at first, but his surprise quickly changed into a grin. The fresh bruises on his “I happened to run into some demons back at 5th. I was just going to ask you to kiss my ‘booboos’ better.”

Flushed, she laughed and turned towards him to kiss the purple bruise on his cheek. The last moment he turned his face towards her and she caught him on the lips. They lingered their kiss for a bit and out of the corner of her eye, Clary caught a look of pure loathing from the faery waitress. It took all of her will, but she managed to brake off the kiss. Her skin was tingling. It took a few days for Jace to master how to kiss her without sending off sparks, and even though when he was kissing her and there was no physical electricity, Clary could feel it beneath her skin.

“Happy birthday,” she told him softly

Kaelie went to take their order. Clary ordered a vanilla milkshake and Jace ordered the chocolate. After she took their order, they talked a bit about the Clave and the recent affairs in the Shadowhunter world while they waited for their milkshakes to arrive. When they did they slowly moved onto the topic of Sebastian. Jace sipped his milkshake thoughtfully and gazed at Clary.

“What was the worst thing that Sebastian did to you?” Thrown off by this sudden question, Clary had to think for a moment.

“Well,” She started, “He killed Max, he took you away from me, and he felt me up.” After hearing the latter, Jace nearly coughed up his milkshake. Clary had to bite her lip to subdue the laughter that was escaping her lips at her boyfriend’s expression

“Sebastian did what?” Jace spluttered. Clary told him about the time when she and Sebastian were fighting and his pinned her down and started kissing her forcefully, and then when she tried to get away he flipped her over and pushed her against the ground and put his hand in her trousers, feeling her up and soon, struggling to get her jeans off.  She could still remember the black eyes with no irises, and the betrayed look on his face. You screwed us over, probably quite literally screwed Jace over.

The whole time she was talking, she had been looking down at her milkshake, and when she was finished filling him in, Clary finally looked up at Jace. His face was filled with disgust and rage. He covered her hand with his. When he finally spoke, there was a dark glint in his eyes.

“It was lucky I wasn’t there, or I probably would have helped him rape you.” Clary gasped and gripped his hand harder

“Jace, don’t say that! Don’t. Please. It wasn’t your fault. If anything it was mine, I should have let you go to Silent City when you had the chance.” She locked eyes with him
