As the officer was yanking Anna out of the car, Anna's mother came running from the house. Her dark eyes flashed in annoyance and her auburn hair seemed to glow ferociously as she approached the car.

"what seems to be the problem officer?" she growled, shooting a dangerous look in Anna's direction.

"your daughter here was caught with stolen goods from Target this afternoon ma'am," the officer said with no emotion, "I was told to deliver her to you and let you try to handle it this once." 

"Oh thank you sir," Anna's mother said with a cold smile as she took Anna by the arm, not too gently, and led her in to the house, with the officer watching them go.

As soon as the door shut behind them, Anna's mother exploded. "WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?" she screamed, lashing out at Anna with a closed fist and making contact with Anna's cheek. Anna fell to the floor in pain while her mom went on, "I THOUGHT WE WERE DONE WITH THE STEALING? WHY DID YOU LIE TO ME?!" 

Now she was holding on to Anna by a fistful of hair. Anna looked up, tears in her eyes, and squeaked, "mama I was hungry." She looked down, sniffing. It was true, Anna's mother had not bought food in a while, and didn't bother to refill Anna's lunch money when it ran
