Chapter 3

Beatrice

I’m very cold as I walk down King Avenue. I shiver in my suede brown coat, and rub my cold, leather protected hands together. I shrivel into a small ball of fear when a car stops beside me. Already I can smell the alcohol on whoever the person is, and it appears to be an older man. The man winks and I give him a disgusted face as I fast walk down the sidewalk. Just a few more houses, I think to myself.

“Hey sweet thing, need a ride?” He splits a grin across his face and shows his yellow tinted teeth. He had blonde hair with some brown in it. He looked about thirty at the most thirty-five. He was about fourteen years older than me.  I laugh nervously.

“No it’s ok. I live just down a few houses.” I keep my voice steady and stand my ground. His grin vanishes and he narrows his eyes.

“Oh come on just a quick ride?” He asks in a twisted humored voice.

“No thank you.” I look towards my house and see the lights on. Maybe if I ran…

“You and I both know that Leo is alive. If you want to know how he still is after the accident I suggest you get into my car.” His words were like a slap in the face. I gasp and fall down hard on the pavement. Little black dots were starting to appear over my vision, but I didn’t care. I had left Damien to try to find out myself what had happened with Leo. I get up and walk over to the passenger side. The man unlocks the door and checks out my breasts as I climb into his car. I slam the door and look at the man. He drives quickly down a few streets and turns and parks in a driveway in front of my old elementary school.

He turns over at me and slides his hand onto my thigh. I bat his hand away, but he grabs my hand and rubs it at the stubble on his chin. I think I’m going to puke.

“I’ve been waiting; we’ve all been waiting for this day to come, for centuries we never imagined it would be so easy to take him away from you, but now that I have you you’re not going back.” His eyes soften and he places my hand down. “You were too good for Leo.” What did he mean by centuries? And I was too good for Leo? More like the other way around.

“Leo was an idiot for ever thinking he could become a ….” I feel frightened, and confused by his words.

The man grins and opens his door. He walks out then gestures me to do the same. He starts walking behind the school into a wide field.  Halfway down the walk between the school and the field, he turns and faces me. His ugly face turns into an even uglier face. His eyes turn narrow, long, and shrink till there slits, his mouth grows gross fang like teeth, and he sprouts wings. With inhuman speed he pounces on me.  I cry out and bite his hand. I taste his alien blood and spit on him. He pins my arms at the side of me and I start to weep. I shut my eyes and prepare for the end to come. But it doesn’t.

A loud sound comes and I hear a big-bang mixed in with a yelp. I start to sob uncontrollably and let the black dots take me under.

I’m lying in the field from before with a massive headache. I have a burgundy checkered blanket wrapped around my muscular built body- something I’ve been very self conscience about throughout elementary school. Now I like to show it off. The smell of lemons was in the air. I sit up and scratch my head.

Beatrice is sitting across from me with a nervous look on her face. I let out a squeak and go to stand on my feet, but she gently pushes my knees down. How did she find me? As if she knew what I was wondering she replied,

“I had been taking Chi (which is her small Chihuahua) for a walk when I saw you get into that man’s car. I dropped Chi back off at home and started running. When he jumped on you I panicked. I saw a huge tree branch that had fallen off from a tree and hit him in the head with it, before he could…” her lip started to quiver. I reached out and in a friend way caressed her knee.
