I cover my eyes. Squinting against the bright lights over head, I try to remember what I'm doing here. But my brain doesn't reveal any answers. I slowly take in my surroundings as my eyes adjust, the whole room bathes in white, not a speck of color except for what I'm wearing, black. Only color I don't refuse to wear after what happened. I sit on a small bed, next to it is a small bedside table that lines up perfectly with the bed. Across the room is a single door with no door knob.
"You've finally made it to the asylum of perdition! Welcome and exit through the door in front of you!" a loud voice echos off the walls. The strange door with no door knob opens.
I'm positive I haven't died, so how am I here? The strange man over the speaker acted like this was a crazy theme park or carnival.
I will myself to get up and move towards the door that opened up to nothingness, like a giant black hole with no gravitational pull to bring me in.
Just before I reach the door frame a horrible pain shoots through my skull and travels down my spine causing me to collapse. Almost as fast as it had come, it's gone, I glance around but nothing's changed.
The loud voice started to echo off the walls again, "You're dying! Hurry and figure out where you're going to spend eternity! Go through the door!" The voice sounded almost excited.I felt exhausted. The pain had somehow taken all of my energy. I crawled through the doorway.
"Welcome! You've finally made it! Go on each ride so we can figure out where you belong! Have a great time!" The loud voice had followed me into this giant carnival room.
The flashing lights of the rides and the different music mixing together was starting to give me a headache, this was too chaotic.
What type of sick joke is this? He said I was dying? I'm not dying... I had a perfectly healthy life yesterday...Wait... What was my life? What's my name?
I yelled into the mass of carnival rides hoping for an answer, "Why am I here? Where did I come from? Why did you say I was dying?"
The voice sounded like he had a permanent smile on his face, "Doesn't matter, sweetie! Just choose a ride and hop on! The sooner you get this over with, the sooner you'll be at your resting place!"
I rubbed my temples, deciding to just get on the little kiddy coaster closest to me. I stepped in and sat down, pulling the metal bar against my lap as the car jerked ahead. I hated roller coasters of any type.
Why couldn't they just pull out a list and tell me whether I've been naughty or nice! They should just send me on my way to somewhere, instead of making me go through this!
The kiddy ride was basically just a circle, how was this going to tell them where to keep me for eternity?
The loud voice came back on, it was so loud and unexpected that I jumped against the metal bar, "Okay! Thank you, sweetie! You're done here! Please go and sit by the cotton candy booth!" He still sounded like that smile was stuck on his face but now there was fear in his voice too.
Apparently that was enough for them to tell where I belong.
Once the metal bar lifts up, I step out, trying to locate the cotton candy booth. I finally found it after 10 minutes of searching, there were two guys dressed in complete black.
Oh good, we match.
They looked like they were bored out of their minds, I sighed and held out my wrists "Are you going to handcuff me? Burn me alive? Drop me into lava?" I tried to sound as bored as I could and keep my voice from shaking.
"Ms. Death." They bowed and as they bowed a portal opened up into more darkness "We've finally found you. Please step in."
I shook my head "I think you have the wrong person...I might have had a lot of people die around me but I'm not death..."
"We don't make mistakes or pick the wrong people." They hissed "Now step in. Your future starts now." They grabbed my arms and shoved me into the darkness. My eyes never adjusted, I couldn't see at all, my new life was complete darkness. It was worse than being stuck in Hell for eternity.
