You know they tell you that you never forget your first time. It can be when you ride a bike, drive, or when you fall in love. I know I'll never forget the first time I died. Well, it's not like I had a choice in the matter. I remember the day too, it was the last day of July. I wanted to catch a movie as a way to celebrate becoming a college graduate. After all the stress I went through getting that psychology degree I deserved it. I normally stay home, if there's something I want to do I plan days in advance before I go, but this time I wanted to be spontaneous. I called up Valerie, my college buddy, and were set for 7:30 that evening.
I got there a bit early, so I waited for her. I had no idea that would be my last night as a human.
Oh before I go on let me tell you that my name is Dana. I grew up in Detroit and all through the changes that went through the city. I remember when they declared bankruptcy then a few years later the paranormal came out and decided to buy the city. Well, it wasn't just Detroit they were buying everything up, all over the world, but that's something to explain for another day.
Anyway while I waited by the new theater in downtown Detroit, I went back to my car to get some tissue when someone pulled me into the alley. I fought them off as best as I could, but they didn't make a move for my purse or anything. He turned me around and explained that he needed some blood. I registered as a donor for the new vampires a few day ago, so I didn't think anything of it. His "little" snack turned into draining me and turning into a vampire. He stayed with me though during the chance even explained what happened when Valerie came around too.
It turned out that the guy going crazy with hunger was the founder of the new paranormal part in the hospital. He gave me a job as the new therapist in the paranormal part of the hospital. I may have died that night at least I came back to a job and a new opportunity. My friend Valerie is still mad at him. I know she'll calm down soon.
I chewed on the end of my pen while I looked at my notes. I had a new presentation to do for the new vampires today and I hit a road block on what to say next. How did you introduce the topic of being a new vampire? Hey, you're dead now welcome! Welcome to your second "life"! I frowned a bit at my notes as I deleted the title of the first slide once again. I wish I had something to help me when I first changed.
Anyway I looked back at the slide in front me before I checked the time. Crap! My shift is starting soon and I finished everything except finding a title for this presentation. It's like college all over again at least I can stay up all night now without drinking a bunch of caffeine. I save what I finished before I go off to take my shower. Maybe I can think better in there.
It turns out that I have more trouble thinking in the shower than when I sit in front of my laptop. I walked back over as I dried my hair, at least I can manage it better, and frowned at the screen again. I go change into my work clothes while I tried to figure out what I can call this presentation. I grabbed the pile of pamphlets off my desk and put them in my bag. I had to make sure that I took them all with me this time. Thanks to the explosion of vampires in the media, everyone wanted to be one and it was my job to make sure people know what they're getting into.
I licked my fangs as I checked the time again. I wondered if I could get something to eat before work. I wasn't too hungry, but it would be a good idea to see my donor. It was right in the hospital, so I wouldn't be too late for work. It's never good to see a patient as a potential meal. Once I checked everything I returned to my laptop to stare at the screen again when it hit me. I leaned over and typed: Welcome to your second chance
It may be a bit cheesy, but I think that's a good way to describe this life. I saved again, closed my laptop, and placed it in my bag. I did my final check of my apartment before I walked over to grab my purse and phone. I locked the door behind me and pulled out my phone on the way to the elevator. I frowned at the text of my friend David that told me he was going to be late again.
I shook my head as I stepped on the elevator.
Well this day is going to start out great.
