The dirt clings to my fingers, I scrub and scrub but it won’t leave me.
The blood stains on my jeans are still there, wash after wash only more bright.
The night still brings a chill of desperation, echoing sirens in the night
Torment me.
Was there nothing I could do
Nothing anyone could do
Our fates were sealed as one, the tragedy felt by all
There was a calm to the day
One that made you believe that nothing out of the ordinary would happen
But a few flashes, a few hours and a few events later and we were wrong
Left behind unsure of what had happened, we searched to help
Nothing could we do that night but watch in quite desperation
A sadness filled the air as a few of us looked at each other and knew
This was the start of something that we all knew would come,
Wars, death, caous, destruction, despair
These all took on new meanings for us
I am unsure who started it, but we all started gathering clothes and food
A few of us headed out to find some trucks and vans
We loaded up what we could and ran
A small ban, a small army
Unsure of what tomorrow would bring
The only certainty was that we were headed to safety
Sirens and despair were all about
Our group was moving
Sirens blazed past us a furry of color and sound
Screams heard everywhere, people searching for the lost
Crying when they found a dead or mangled body
We ran. Out of the city
Out of the light that had been consumed by darkness
We only knew to survive was to live
Hours went by
Not a single word spoken
Eyes were the great communicator
We found a spot
Like a castle it was
High gates, secure entry
Ample opportunity
Still in unloading our trucks and Vans 7 in all
No one spoke a word, 20 people working side by side
Silent as the wind
When the work was done
And all was safe inside the high forteres
