Chapter 4

The rest of the night was boring and uneventful; accept for Jr., the demon child, who chose to cry several times. Every time he would cry, I would want to cry. James kept teasing me that I was going to break down and cry when at four in the morning, it wouldn’t shut up.

I punched James for that.

“Violet… Violet… God damn woman! Wake up!” I heard someone shout in my ear. Along with that, I heard the cries of a robotic baby that was determined to drive me insane. Not wanting to get up, I thrust my wrist with the key, up in the air. “Seriously?” James sighed, I grunted in response. He grabbed my hand, and I felt warm tingles shoot up my arm. I didn’t know what it was, or how to explain it, so I chose to ignore it, as James struggled to shut the baby up.

When it was finally done, I felt the bed dip beside me, as James flopped down.

Just as I was about to slip back into a sweet dream filled oblivion, there was a knock on my door.

“Mackenzie? Open the door, dear.” Carla. I shuddered. “Honey, it’s almost noon, you really should wake up.” I continued to ignore her, planning to sleep through her incessant knocking, but a shirtless James got up, and opened the door. “Macken-oh… H-Hello. Mackenzie, who is this?”

Before I could answer the soon to be step-monster, James did for me. “I am the father of her baby.”

It didn’t take long for Carla to respond.

“Well, I can’t say that I’m surprised much. I figured she had a…difficult past, you know, because of her tattoos.” She whispered the last part, but she is about as good with whispering, as I am with directions.

“He’s not the father of my baby, I was never pregnant. And thanks for that, bitch.” I didn’t raise my voice, and I didn’t glare. I simply said it as I sat up.

I stretched my arms over my head, and looked at Carla. Her eyes were wide, and she looked like she didn’t know what to say.

Before anyone could say anything, my phone rang.

“Hello?” I answered without looking at the caller I.D.

“Macks?” Danny was on the other end of the call, and his voice was raspy, like he had been crying. Immediately I was on high alert, all sleepiness that may have stayed from when I woke up, was shocked out of my system.

“What’s wrong?” I asked cutting through any formalities he may have wanted to go through.

“My mom, she… I…hospital.” As soon as I heard that Melody was in trouble, I shot out of bed, and went to my closet. I was half dressed by the time he finished his choppy sentence. He was in tears, and something was definitely wrong, Danny never cried.

“Where are you? I’m on my way now.” I said into the phone, leaving no room for argument. I was already dressed, and grabbing the essentials I would need to meet him back home; money, phone keys, cigarettes, and a change of clothes.

“Mercy Hospital.” Fuck. It was about a six hour drive from here, but Danny needed me. I would walk here if I had to.

I was vaguely aware that Carla and now my father were yelling at me to slow down, and stop running around, but all I could hear was Danny’s sobs on the other end of the line.

“I have to g-go. The d-doctors here. H-hurry Mack.” He said, I almost broke down myself at how broken he sounded.

“I’ll be there as soon as I can Danny.” With that, I hung up the phone. I spun around on my heel, prepared to leave, until I saw my dad and Carla blocking the door way.  I knew they were there, but I needed them to understand that I had to leave now, and I didn’t have time, Danny didn’t need me to waist anytime with explanations.
