Once I had reached the yard I looked at and was amazed by just how huge it was compared to a normal penitentary even though I did have experience with this prison. I looked around me and some men were working weights, some were dossing in clusters and some were sat at tables. I was accompanied by my cellie whose name is Fernando Sucre.
As we walked through the gates Fernando pointed towards seperate groups of people. One of which were playing netball.
FERNANDO: They get the hoops.
He pointed towards the a gang on a set of 3 benches.
FERNANDO: They got the bleachers
and finally pointed towards a group by the weights.
FERNANDO: They got the weight pile.
FERNANDO: Co's got the rest.
FERNANDO: You wanna watch out for the guards and C.O's, they are the dirtiest bunch in here. The only difference between them and us is the badge.
I had only been here for a sporadic amount of hours and I am starting to feel uneasy. So far a man has already been stabbed and that's just the start of things to come. We continued walking when I saw a lonely old man sitting at table with a cat in his hands. The man had grey hair and a bushy mustache underneath his rather large nose which potruded from his wrinkly face.
" Who's the pet lover?"
FERNANDO: He'll deny it but he's DV Cooper. Parachuted out of a plan 30 years ago with a million and a half in cash.
" Doesn't look like the type."
FERNANDO: Who does?
He said this whilst grinning and I imagined that he must have been referring to me with his last comment. Fernando turned around abrupty and greeted two black men, one of them was the man who asked me what I was looking at earlier when I first reached my cell his name I believe to be Ozel. He had black hair which was in the style of a short afro and he had a designer beard and mustache which added to the impression that he wasn't one to be messed with.
He looked at me his eyes scanning me from head to toe, judging me.
OZEL: What you doing with this fish man?
FERNANDO: He's my new cellie.
Fernando turned to me with a huge grin on his face.
FERNANDO: Anything you want fish Ozel can get it for you.
Ozel: Hey if you keep on selling on my jacket I'm gonna bust your grape.
They continued to bicker as I ascertained the yard. I stepped away from the group and focused on two yellow water hydrants which stood at opposite sides of the fence I then looked towards a drain which was emitting smoke into the yard not far away from one of them. I looked down towards my feet and saw a rusted drain jutting out from the worn grass that covered the yard. I conspiciously withdrew Fernando's magazine from my withing my jacket throwing at the floor near the drain. I look up at the guard tower and ensuring they weren't watching I bent down and prised the magazine through the thin gaps of the drain cover, watching it as it dropped a few inches and hit the wet concrete foor of the drain.
I turned back towards Fernando and his group who had now ceased arguing like grade schoolers.
" I'm looking for someone. A guy named Lincoln Burrows."
FERNANDO: Link the sink?
" Is that what they call him now?"
OZEL: Yh isn't he. He would at you with everything but the kitchen sink.... shnowflake.
" Where can I find him?"
Fernando pointed towards a crouching figure on the otherside of the fence, completely isolated and propped against a wall. Fernando departed the group and we walked towards the fence.
FERNANDO: Man killed the prime ministers brother in a month he's getting the chair that's why they put him separate from us cuz the guy's got nthing to lose now. What are they gonna do kill him twice?
" Is there a way I could get to him?"
FERNANDO: I dunno the only time those boys get out is for Chapel and PI.
" PI what is that?"
Fernando shrugged still fixated on Lincoln.
FERNANDO: Prison Industry, the guys that get along get to work you know painting, scrapping, making matresses, you name it. I wouldn't get excited if I were you though Fish, you aint sniffing none of PI.
" Why's that?"
FERNANDO: Because Jhon Abruzzi runs it.
I turn and face Fernando and smile.
" Jhon Abruzzi - Jhon Abruzzi?"
FERNANDO: Jhon Abruzzi- Jhon Abruzzi. Why do you wanna see Burrows so bad anyway?
" Because he's my brother."
