I once fell in love,

he was tall and thin

to compliment my short roundness

but then I remembered 

he lived too far away

in a metal box

and was far into his 40’s

by the time I took my first breath

I fell in love again

a few days later

it was a woman this time

she was large,

her skin was darker than 

the coffee I stirred each morning 

to help keep me awake

and her voice had the sweetness 

of the syrup I drown my pancakes with

but again,

I came to realize she too lived

too far away

this time in a small

run down apartment in the heart

of New York City

and was well into her 20’s

by the time I took my first breath

I fell in love once more 

with a man

whose smile was whiter 

than the paper I’m writing

this on

we had everything in common

except he lived 

in the depths of Las Vegas

and was well into his teens

by the time I took my first breath
