I once fell in love,
he was tall and thin
to compliment my short roundness
but then I remembered
he lived too far away
in a metal box
and was far into his 40’s
by the time I took my first breath
I fell in love again
a few days later
it was a woman this time
she was large,
her skin was darker than
the coffee I stirred each morning
to help keep me awake
and her voice had the sweetness
of the syrup I drown my pancakes with
but again,
I came to realize she too lived
too far away
this time in a small
run down apartment in the heart
of New York City
and was well into her 20’s
by the time I took my first breath
I fell in love once more
with a man
whose smile was whiter
than the paper I’m writing
this on
we had everything in common
except he lived
in the depths of Las Vegas
and was well into his teens
by the time I took my first breath
