There are a lot of cliches out there. Some are good some are bad. I'm here to give my honest opinion on which is which. Starting with books/Fanfiction.
Creepypasta:
Alright, I'm a HUGE fan of Creepypasta. I even dedicated a whole year to write a lengthy book on the topic. It's popular, creepy, and one of those things that you can't like completely, but hate completely either. But damn, are there cliches in Creepypasta Fanfics!
If you scroll down some Creepypasta x readers, or Creepypasta x OC stories, nine out of ten times, this is what you'll find in a summery:
"(Name) is a mentally disturbed teen. He/She is abused, bullied, unloved, and unwanted, until (Creepypasta) turns her life upside down!""(Name)'s life was perfect, until (Creepypasta) popped into her life. Now she has to somehow survive, and fend off her growing feelings for (Creepypasta)."
(I'm a victim to this cliche in any book. My characters are usually quiet with a bite, or sarcastic and can't take anything seriously. Unless, they are based off people i know.)
Then they end up getting together in a perfect relationship- or almost perfect relationship- become sexually active, and maybe even get married down the road.
So now I told you. How do you prevent this cliche? Try basing your character off a completely normal, loved, teen! Show some character development and have fun! Everything can't happen within a chapter!
They're related to a cannon character:
I've fell victim to this, ONCE. And it was my very first Fanfic ever. A Fairy Tail one no less.
But that's because my character seemed similar to Fairy Tail's Laxus. In the beginning, i had no intentions of making them related.
But you see this cliche everywhere! Its a character we never knew was related to him/her, they were seperated at birth, or he/she is a long-lost relative.
How do you prevent this? Shake things up a bit! If you want your character and a cannon character to share some kind of relationship, make them a close friend, or a child of their parents' friend(s). They don't have to be related!
Only one character is gender-bent:
I can't count high enough how many times I've seen this.
One minute, the male/female character is super, and the next, they're the opposite gender because they've been cursed, or because they mysteriously woke up like that one day. If you're going to make one character gender-bent, make all of them gender-bent! For crying out loud!
If its something like Adventure Time AU, where in the series everything is deliberately gender-bent, that is perfectly fine. Why? Because its not only part of the series, but everyone is gender-bent.
How do you prevent this? Don't do it. Simple as that.
Twisting a perfectly normal anime around and changing everything in it:
This one may be a bit picky, but let me give you an example.
'This is going to be a (Fandom) Fanfiction, but this is going to be changed, that is going to be changed, they're in a completely different world, they jump through time, go to different worlds, this perfectly normal anime is going to turn into a Yoai down the road, AND there's going to be major character death. Hope you enjoy!
*No Warnings*.'
No. No, no, no, no, NO. What the hell is that? What the hell are you trying to subject me to?! It's not even the same fandom. You just took the characters and made your own fandom! If you're gonna do that, create your own characters!
And what's with the Yoai? The anime wasn't a Yoai to begin with. You can't just turn it into one! It won't be the same!
Character death? That may be fine, but MAJOR character death? Are you trying to rip the strings to my frail heart?
No warnings? You just said that there's going to be a Yoai twist and major character death. How does this compute?! Is it a lie?UGH!
How do you avoid this cliche? I can't. I just can't help you there. I'm sorry.
~Cliches I LOVE~
High school drama:
There is no better way to open a teen-drama Fanfic, or any for that matter. I love me some high school drama! Just don't go overboard with snotty teenager girls, and narcissistic pricks.
Your OC has a hidden power/talent:
Yes. Yes, yes, ohmagosh, YES!
As long as the power/talent isn't something too unrealistic, and you put in enough detail, I eat this shit up like candy!Comedy:
Nothing much to say. I love a good laugh! Who wants to read something with absolutely no comedy? Not me!
It's the books that have the main character do nothing but joke that gets frustrating. He/she can't he cracking jokes left and right when something major is happening. It just wouldn't be right, ya know?~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There. I said it. I said my peace. Love ya!
