After the movie, I walked back to the car. My skin felt hot and itchy where Will had touched me and my hair was messed up, the curls fallen completely flat and was sticking up on the side Will had pulled at it. The trunk was open and Kendall was sitting with her legs hanging over the side, talking and laughing on the phone.
"Hey," I said warily. She turned her back to me after giving me an icy glare. I felt anger hit me like a truck, why was she being such a bitch? I'd gotten barely upset when she brought up Will and she hadn't even asked for my reason. If it had been any other day, I would be telling her everything about Will and Jack and our "movie" date.
"K, bye," Kendall said into her phone before hanging up. Then she said in a dry, monotone voice, "I heard that you went out with Will King today." My stomach dropped. Underneath the uncaring tone, I could hear she was jealous. I couldn't blame her, Will was gorgeous.
"Yeah. We saw a movie," I said, sitting down next to her uncomfortably. "How'd you hear about it?"
"Kelsey told me. We hung out today at the beach. We took a surfing lesson," Kendall said. I couldn't tell if she was still mad, her voice wasn't giving away anything.
"Cool," I said. "Did you say hi for me?"
"Yeah. If you don't mind I'm going to go to bed. Sarah and Kelsey and I are going to breakfast in the morning and I guess you'll be busy with Will or something." She rolled over and I sighed exasperatedly. She wasn't worth talking to, I needed a break from her attitude.
"Ok," I said and put my head down as well. As soon as I'd gotten comfortable, my phone buzzed. Lazily, I checked to see who was texting me this late at night. To my surprise, it was Will.
Hey, Misty. Wanna FaceTime? I smiled at his message and replied with a simple 'yes.' A minute later my phone rang and I quickly got out of the car so Kendall wouldn't yell at me for disturbing her beauty sleep.
"Hi, Will," I said softly.
"What's up?" He was laying on his back in bed, the sheets around him bunched up and piled near his head.
"Uhh, not much." Suddenly I just wanted to tell him everything, about Kendall and how weird Mom was acting. "Well, I guess there is some stuff going on," I began.
"Yeah, sorry. I just wanted to, like, say the movie was chill and if you wanted to hook up again, we could," he smiled. His deep blue eyes were captivating, even over a screen.
"I'll think about it. Night," I said, hanging up quickly. My stomach churned once again. "God, Misty. Get it together. What do you want?" I whispered to myself, rolling onto my back.
I woke up pressed close to Kendall's back. It couldn't have been later than maybe 6 am, a few stars still shining overhead. Kendall shifted away, stretching her arms over her head. "What time is it?" she mumbled through a yawn
"I don't know," I said. I grabbed her phone from the portable charger and turned it on. She had changed her wallpaper. Before it had been a picture of the two of us smiling in front of the lit up city on New Year's Eve. Now it was her and Kelsey. I slammed it back down.
"God, Misty, chill. I asked for the time," she snapped.
"Yeah, and I wanted to go on a vacation with my best friend," I hissed back.
"What are you even talking about?" Her hand reached out to grab her phone.
"I'm out of here," I said, falling out of the back of the car. I slipped and fell on my back hard. I could almost hear my skin rip as it tore across a sharp rock sticking out of the ground. "Oh my-"
Kendall got out of the car as well, her hair pushed in her eyes. "Misty, what is going on? Are you ok?"
The dirt and sharp stones around me began to wet with my blood coming from the gash in my back. "Ow," I whimpered.
Kendall screamed. "Misty. I'm going to get you in the car. We're going to go down to a hospital."
"No, no, no. I'm good." I didn't know if I was good-my back was stinging from where the rock had stabbed through it. I rolled over so Kendall could see how badly damaged it was.
"It's not as bad as I thought, thank goodness," she breathed. She reached into the car for our first-aid kit to dress my wound. With the help of some antibiotic spray and a few bandaids, the cut was clean and covered. I stood up, just a little shaky, and fell into her arms for a hug.
"I'm really sorry, Ken."
"Yeah, me too."
"I won't try to run away again."
"I'll try not to piss you off anymore." She looked at me, laughing. I smiled back. Inside of me, it felt like an earthquake. Pieces falling back together, though. This was fixed.
