So here I was, The “New Girl”. I watched from my car as people filled through the “parking lot” (or as I call it the, car park) towards the big old stone buildings, otherwise known as St Jacksons High. I could hear snippets of conversation as people passed my windows. I enjoyed people watching at the best of times, but this, this was something different.
I waited till the crowd has dulled down before I slid out my car and shoved my headphones in my ears. I looked at my reflection in my car, I wasn’t used to wearing my own clothes, I felt naked, strange, like I already didn’t belong. I grabbed the piece of paper I was given by the school out of my bag and looked down at the lessons I had that day. “Home group” was first in F4. I sighed and put my sunglass on, shielding myself from the world; I put my head down and walked.
I was used to the gapes and stares. I had moved so many times before it was second nature. But this time I was here for good. This impression counted. I could see the whispers already forming in there open mouths. “So that’s her?” I imagined them saying “The new girl” I continued to walk down the everlasting hall, my music blaring in my ears. I had no idea where I was going but I kept going, it was the only thing I could do.
I felt a tap on my shoulder and spun around.
“Miss Evens? Anna Evens?” A short portly woman asked
“Yes?” I said hesitantly
“Hi, I’m Ms Miller, Your Home group teacher. I was told to come and find you. Welcome to St Jacksons."
"Oh, Hi."
“Home Groups this way” she laughed, pointing in the completely opposite direction.
Great
I thought I’ve embarrassed myself already.
I sat at the back of the class. And watched people ran in, stop, look at me and whisper to one another.
I smiled to myself. If only I was surprised, I might enjoy myself.
“Yo! Dean!” a guy called to the tall dark haired boy who had just walked in.
Dean looked up at the broad, stocky guy who had called his name. He jerked his head towards me, and Dean followed his gaze.
He laughed, and sat next to his friend. The desk right in front of me. He turned round and leaned back; he looked as though he did this every day.
“soooo…. New girl, then eh?” he asked
“yeah?” I shrugged
“Pretty cool” he grinned “why move to this place? Why not stay in Bri-ain?”
He mocked using an appalling British accent.
“First of all, Britain has a T in it.” I pointed out irritatingly “and my parents are writers, so we move to a new town whenever they write a new book. They say it gives them “inspiration”.
"How did know I was from England?"
“it’s a small town” he shrugged “ anyway, Welcome to Hell”
“Thanks,” I said dryly “But I’ve seen worse.”
Dean chuckled
“ you’re alight new girl, you’re alright”
“My names Anna”
“Dean” he said “ And this is Chace”
He pointed to the blond stocky guy next to him, who turned around and smiled.
