He had been dragged back to the enemy camp, chained to a post they built, with two Kunden soldiers watching him constantly. One of them must've been sixteen, because he was trying to be nice. The other one, a veteran, Nicholas assumed, had a bandaged arm that looked like it could've been removed ages ago. He had a cold stare while the other's innocence nearly broke Nicholas down to tears. I've let myself fall to the hands of the enemy, and the worst part is... if I am saved... this young lad will die. Well, that or this young boy will have to be charged with executing me.
"Prisoner," the young one started. Nice and warming starter.
"I have questions about Nara, so in return, you can ask questions about Kunden. Well, within reason." This kid is interrogating me?!
"What's it like, as a child, in your homeland?" What is this.
"It's... it's..." When I was a kid? "It's scary. The world is at war, and you know that you'll soon have to join that chaos. And in the end, you're not allowed to hate the enemy for anything, they get what they get and you get what you get... or lost..."
He nodded. He waited in an expectant silence and then Nicholas realized this was his opportunity to inquire some information. "And what of your home? How was it when you left?"
He spoke quickly, like he had always thought of it with each passing day. "It's great. We start learning of our weapons at age ten, though, but until then, it's a pleasant enough place. You know everyone in your neighborhood, whether they're old or young, or even don't go to your sector's school." Age ten? Only?! I had to learn when I was... what, six?
"Now, my turn. Why'd you join the army?"
Hold on. Did he just say join?! "You're joking. I know you get drafted, as well."
He smiled. "Well then, what happened to your leg?"
"Friendly fire," Nicholas mumbled. Hold on. Did I just let him get away with asking two questions?
"Hey, hold it, I've got a question now. What do your people think of us?"
He became grim in an instant. "Heartless, murderers, warriors to the core. Barbaric. Power-hungry." Wait a second... how??! Didn't... wait... no, they started the war. They thought we were becoming too strong... but... they started this war!
"Your country was planning to start a war, so we put an end to your technological advancements before you could perfect them." Technological advancements? We were preparing for a war?
"With Ander, Tyran, and... ... which was it? Ah, Fruma, the Contract of Kunden was formed. There's your history lesson." Hm... He must be from Ander or Tyran...
Nicholas felt obligated to tell him something but didn't exactly know much. All I know is that there are traitors popping up, and our country is on a path to chaos...
"Sir! We've caught someone!"
"A spy?"
"Uncertain!"
Nicholas shifted his gaze over to find a black-haired, silent, non-resisting man about his age walk over and take a seat beside him, being tightly surrounded with rope. They added a guard to our sentry and then the commotion was over. Wow, that attention span.
"Nicholas."
"Wilson?!" He turned his head hopefully. Wilson looked up.
"Nicholas, Lauren's... a traitor."
WHAT?! "How'd you figure that out?" Nicholas whispered.
"How do you think," he spat.
Wow... I can't believe it.
