That was it.
She was gone.
Clara Oswald had once again been ripped from the Time Lords hands and lost like dust in the wind. Never to be seen again. Well, not this version of her. Someday The Doctor would run into another version Clara. Another girl to save his life once more.
Clara's death had caused something to snap inside The Doctor, he hadn't quite figured it out himself yet. But everything around the Time Lord seemed that tiny bit dark without his impossible girl beside him to lighten his day. The Doctor's hearts felt as though they were shattering, bit by bit. Pain searing through him at every through of her.
"Oh Clara..." a pained whisper came from the Time Lord. "My Clara..."
The Doctor circled the TARDIS console. Not daring to place his hands on any controls, not even thinking about taking off yet. He couldn't leave, leaving this place meant leaving Clara behind, and that was something The Doctor just would never do. He had vowed to never leave her, never leave her frightened or alone.
But here I am again, The Doctor thought, running away.
The TARDIS hummed, a slow soothing hum. The Doctor knew every word she was saying but wasn't quite listening. He didn't want to hear the usual I'm sorry, or, everything will get better. Because the Time Lord knew it would never be okay. He had lost his best friend, the one person he loved.
"She left something for you." The TARDIS hummed. Making The Doctor immediately look up from his feet, his thoughts fading away.
The Doctor's eyebrow's furrowed in confusion, confused on what the TARDIS meant.
"Clara left something. She told me to tell you in case anything... happened."
The Doctor could hear the pain in her voice. The TARDIS didn't have a voice per-se, but The Doctor knew when she was sad. Even though the Time Machine despised Clara in the beginning, The Doctor found that most recently the two were beginning to bond.
"Where?" The Doctor asked, almost ready to sprint down the corridors.
"In her bookshelf in her room." The TARDIS gave a light hum.
The Doctor stood up, racing down the TARDIS hallways. By passing the library, the pool, and other bedrooms. Some vacant, others not. He stopped at a red door, with Clara's name neatly printed in Gallifreyan. Clara had begged for so long to learn, and The Doctor finally gave in, teaching her simple words and phrases like her name and so forth. The Doctor smiled, tracing his fingers along the circular wording.
He pressed his hand to the door knob, opening her door slowly. He had never been into Clara's room before. It was "strictly off limits" according to the brunette herself. Clara had decorated the room on her own, each wall was white except for one single dark red wall. There were photo frames everywhere. Some filled, some that will never be filled. The Time Lord picked up a frame, smiling at the photo inside. It was a picture of Clara, who looked roughly six at the time, wearing a school uniform that seemed three sizes too big, standing next to her mother, who smiled down at her Clara clutching onto her mother's hand tightly.
The Doctor's eyes quickly scanned around for Clara's bookshelf, attempting to find one last piece of his companion he could hold onto. Finding it neatly in between her bed and desk. The Doctor quickly took each book out of the carefully painted bookshelf. Noting each novel as he went, finding dusty books written by Jane Austen to new hard covered books by J.K Rowling, until he came across one book.
101 Places to See
The Doctor gently flipped through the pages, smiling at the leaf still pressed in between the first two pages. The inside page still held Clara's neat print, from the age of nine to twenty-seven. The number 28 printed underneath it. Never to be crossed off...
Something caught The Doctor's eye. Clara's phone. Tucked underneath a copy of Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility. The Doctor fumbled his way to the phone, unlocking it with a heavy heart. This was it. After this Clara would be gone.
Inside Clara's phone was a video. A single video of Clara. The Doctor pressed play with a shaky hand.
"Doctor" The Doctor's heartstrings gave a painful tug as Clara's voice filled the room, her red lips formed into a smile and her brown eyes shined.
"If you're listening to this. It means that something's happened, and the TARDIS has told you to come here." Clara bit her lip, trying to find the right words to say. "It's either that or you're snooping in my bedroom!" She laughed softly, her chocolate eyes laughing along. "But if it was the first option, then yes. Something has happened... And... I won't be coming back for a while."
The Doctor gently rubbed his forehead, phone still in hand. He didn't want to watch the rest, he could already see the tears pricking the side of his companions' eyes, not knowing whether she would be able to hold them back or not...
"Doctor I need you to know right now, right in this very moment, how insanely grateful I am for you, and how important you are to me." She took a deep breath, tucking her brown hair behind her ears. "Without you, I would be living at home, having no idea of the how beautiful the universe around me was. But you were the one to help me see how amazing everything is. And how amazing I could be..." A tear rolled down the brunette's cheek and Clara raised her hand to wipe it away. The Doctor feeling a pang of guilt, not being able to wipe away her tears himself.
"I will never ever forget you." Clara continued, "I will never forget the adventures we went on, the people we've met, or the galaxies we've saved, because none of that would have been the same if my best friend wasn't by my side the entire way holding my hand."
The Doctor took his eyes off of the screen for a moment, looking down at his feet. Not caring about the tear falling from his eyes, "Do you remember the day we met?" Clara asked, "It was all over a phone call. I called the TARDIS thinking you were the man to fix the Wi-Fi." Clara laughed, The Doctor recalling the memory himself, it was one of the happiest moments of his life. After all that time he had finally found Clara again.
"I can still remember the silly monk costume you wore." Clara shook her head, chestnut hair falling into her face. "Ever since then my life changed. That was the very day I had found my best friend."
Then it was silent, The Doctor could hear Clara's shaky breaths from the video. Wiping away any tears she couldn't help but shed.
"I love you" Clara smiled sadly, directly into the camera, making The Doctor's hearts skip a beat. "I always have. And I always will. No matter what. And I'm so sorry I was never able to tell it to your face..."
"But guess what? You're gonna get nothing out of just sitting here. So go Doctor, go off and see the stars. In fact you know what..."
Only a few seconds were left of the video, and a smirk formed on the corners of Clara's lips, the next sentence rolling off of her tongue...
"Run you clever boy...
And remember me..."
