Wedding Ring

I glanced at my window. The whole town was turning orange as the leaves started to fall and the season of spring bid its goodbye.

It was a windy afternoon as the leaves made its way to the lonely streets of Santa Rosa. I was playing with Hunter just outside his house. Hunter and I were best friends since I was five years old. Because aside from our parents are best friends, we just lived in a small town here in San Francisco. I find him so fun to be with, he often makes me laugh and talk about silly things.

“Hunter, do you like rain?” I asked.

“Why did ask so sudden?” he asked.

I looked up. “I don’t know, it’s just that, it’s kind of windy and I think it’s about to rain.”

“Tsk. Common Leigh, don’t tell me you’re afraid of rain?”

“Of course not! It’s just that, I hate mud.” I said as I kicked one of the stones in the ground.

Then suddenly lightning struck and followed by a very loud thunder.

“Ahhhhh!!” I screamed and ran back to the house.

I heard Hunter laughing so hard upon seeing me.

“Chicken!” he shouted.

I was seven and you were nine

I looked at you like the stars that shined

In the sky

I closed the door and mom saw me so afraid.

“Oh honey, what’s wrong?”

“It’s just thunder mom.”

“Oh it’s okay. Here, grab some snacks.”

“Thanks mom.”

I glanced at the window.  The rain started to pour.

“Where’s Hunter?” my mom asked.

Then someone knocked on the door.

“That’s him.”

She opened the door and saw Hunter standing in the front door.

“Oh dear, why are you so wet?”

“Hi Mrs. Smith. Can I come in?”

“Of course dear, come in.”

Hunter sat beside me in the dining room and grabbed some sandwich.

“Ooh, the lovely birds started to have their snacks.” my dad teased when he saw us sitting together.

And our daddies used to joke about the two of us

Growing up and falling in love and our mamas smiled

And rolled their eyes and said oh my my my

“Where’s your mom, by the way?” I asked.

“They’re out to buy some stuff.” he said munching his sandwich.

“Oh yeah, It’s because tomorrow’s your birthday, you’re turning nine.”

“Yeah, come over alright?”

“Sure.”

The next day came and we celebrated Hunter’s birthday and all our other friends and neighbours came over. They had cakes and balloons. We also ate ice cream and did some usual things. The days went well, and we often did our usual stuffs, like watching movies, playing in the rain just like what other kids often do. I was happy being with him. There was even a time, that in the middle of our game he loses so I dared him to kiss me. I can see that he was shy, and ran when he tried. I even laughed so hard after seeing his face turned red.
