Vala awoke with a jolt. She looked around wildly, half expecting one of the cats from her dream stalk toward her. She relaxed when she realized that she was home. She settled back down into the curve of her mother's belly. The soothing sound of the forest calmed her. And the gentle rise and fall of her mother's and brother's chest made her feel welcome. This was her home. And she would choose her own path in life, not Ivy. Her mind jolted back to her dream. The horror of falling, the warmth of Grace's presence, and the fear that she would fall into a terrible fate because of Ivy. She shook her head to clear her thoughts. Vala's legs felt stiff and bruised, and when she looked down, she saw claw marks scored across her flank. She glared at them. You can hurt me all you want, Ivy. Nothing is going to stop me from defeating you. Vala thought stubbornly. The sun was shining through the trees, and the birds chirped their songs to on another. What could go wrong on a day like this? Her eyes drooped and she realized that even though she had been asleep, the fight with Ivy had rattled her and tired her out. She tucked her back paws under her belly, rested her chin on her front paws, wrapped her tail around her muzzle, and closed her eyes. No dreams came to her again that night.
