Is it wrong to feel like you're above the social scenes of a dreadful high school, and could be using your God-given talents for something useful? Why waste your time in a place in which you are not appreciated physically, mentally, and emotionally? Someone please dumb down a logical explanation as to why we are forced to be in one of the worst places that could make you unstable before you gain stability.
"Harmony," I hear my mom yell as I try to somehow power off my ears, " it's time for school, so get up." It's the first day back to school from a two week winter break. My two week departure from Bridgewood has been like a breath of fresh air. I spent time with my family and friends. Most of the time was spent with my little sister Lyrik, who is only a year younger than me. She was like my mini me. We spent our winter break how we normally would spend it: baking anything sweet, making a ton of hot chocolate, shopping with our Christmas money, and watching all of the Christmas movies known to man. No school work, petty drama, or anything else. Now it was time to get right back to this hell hole we call school.
Walking through the double doors, I see the people I have to continue to see for the rest of the school year. I swear the students here act like they're some type of animal in the wild. It's more so the underclassmen. The upperclassmen really don't care too much for being here. Juniors and seniors are pretty laid back and are ready to graduate. Seniors more than anybody. I know I am. There are no bells, so I peep the clock and see that it's time to head to class. I hate going to my 1st hour. I don't talk to anyone in there. What typical teenager doesn't want a class with their friends? Time to get it over with.
First hour is finally over and it's time for my second class. Now my day can truly get started. Standing outside of the music hall, I see my two best friends, Nika and Erica.
"It's about time you got here, you walk too slow." I rolled my eyes and hugged Nika. "Go on ahead and hug her first then."
"Nika didn't give me any lip about me walking too slow." Nika laughed as I walked extra slow making my way to Erica. "Now, come on and hug me." Knowing that her resistance wouldn't last long, I clinged onto her and she did the same. Walking down the hall, we continue to joke as we head to our 2nd hour class.
"Have you talked to Mal today?" Erica asked as we placed our stuff on the table.
"I don't think he's here today."
I continued to situate myself, "If he was he would've walked with us to class."
Jamal has to be the best of them all. As of tomorrow, he will be my boyfriend of exactly one year. I'm excited to see what he has planned for the day. He used to plan new things for us way back when. He doesn't do that so much nowadays. It seems like we never have time to hang out much like we used to. I'm always free to hang out, yet he's not. He says it's been because of sports and other things, but I'm not too sure how it's either of those things because I know his sport schedules. I don't mean to sound like a crazy/stalker girlfriend, but I feel like he's pulling away. Hopefully, I don't feel like that tomorrow.
The next day...
Jamal had my hand and I felt a little uncomfortable. Why did I feel uncomfortable holding his hand? He's my boyfriend. My hands shouldn't be as sweaty and wet as Niagara Falls. I was worried that I might feel paranoid tonight and tried to make myself not feel that way. It didn't turn out that way. All I could think about is what I thought about the day before. How I feel a bit neglected and the fact that he never has time for me. I don't know why I won't just say what's on my mind.
We went to the Sky Jumper and entered the free zone to jump on trampolines. I really didn't want to be here. I had something more romantic in mind. Not really, but I'm sure you understand.
Once we got on, I got a little scared. While he was jumping he made a ton of silly faces. I started to giggle and that's when he jumped off and came my direction. He got higher and higher. He landed so hard that I started jumping without even commanding myself to do so.
We kept on going and I was actually starting to have fun.
After a while in the Free Zone, he led me over to playing dodge ball. We were the only two playing, but he still made it fun.
He missed almost every throw and after a couple of throws myself, I finally hit him in the chest. The referee blew the whistle and we headed off of the trampolines once again. The rest of the time at Sky Jumper, we went to every station and we had a blast.
After we left Sky Jumper, Jamal decided that we should go and get something to eat.
"What do you gotta taste for?" he asked.
"Whatever is fine." He nodded his head and we were off.
We had been in the car for at least half an hour. I would have asked where we were going, but I just decided to shut up and ride. After a little while I started drifting off to sleep.
When I woke up I saw that we weren't in Bridgewood, or any place near. We were actually in Tunein Hills.
"What are we doing here?" I asked. He smiled and kept driving.
Next thing I knew we pulled in to Johnny Carinos. He knew that this was my favorite restaurant. While I was surrounded by my thought, I heard the car door slam. Jamal was at my door helping me out of the car. Walking into the restaurant, the mixtures of sweet and salty aromas lingered in my nose. The zesty sauces and new spices made my stomach growl.
The night consisted of us stuffing our faces and having deep conversations. He talked, I listened. I talked, he listened. I expressed to him my feelings before the date and he made me feel way better. I needed closure and he gave it to me. This is a great night. Jamal really went all out to make this the best night. This night surely was a great confirmation as to how much he really did care about me.
Back to school...
"So," I hear a familiar voice approaching, "how was the date?" Nika asked with excitement in her voice. I closed my locker and faced her with the biggest smile.
"It was perfect," we continued on down the hall, "and I honestly feel like this had to been the best date I've ever been on." I continued to inform Nika on the date. As we were walking, we came across the little alley inside the school next to a set of lockers in the west wing. I knew this alley very well. This was where Jamal and I came to be a typical teenage couple. It was of course our little make out spot.
I hadn't seen Jamal around much since we've gotten back from break. Although yesterday was great and I've told him a million times, I wanted to tell him once again how great I thought he was for putting on that date for our one year anniversary. For some reason, I had the urge to look down that alley to see if he might've been waiting there for me. Normally he would've texted me to meet him, but other times he's sitting there alone hoping I see him on my way to class.
Turning my head, I saw something that made my heart drop. Everything and everyone around me stopped and went as quiet as a graveyard. It was like you could hear the shattering pieces of my heart hitting the ground and spreading all across the floor.
I saw Jamal exchanging kisses with someone else. In our spot! I tried to make some type of sound to let him know that I was standing there, but nothing came out.
" What in the world?" I snapped out of my frozen, yet depressing world. I felt like I had to check myself. Did I just say that? That didn't sound like my voice. I turned the other direction to see Nika with a disgusted look on her face. Placing my attention back towards Jamal and the mystery girl. Jamal stood there speechless looking at me, at the girl, then back at me. It was like he was trying to tell me something without actually trying to tell me. The girl finally turns around and I couldn't believe my eyes. I thought maybe my eyes were playing mind games and were just deceiving me. I make eye contact with a familiar face. Her eyes just as brown as mine, and lips are just as full. Her face favored mine, yet I avoided direct eye contact.
"Harmony," the familiar voice started, "I'm so sorry."
