It used to be safe. Life used to be enjoyable. I would just spend time with my sister Kate, not a care in the world. My dad Robert was my role model, the definition of a man. I was just a teenager, and a few days ago I was able to sign up for life in vault 221 just in case. Just in case. My sister was going to be old enough to sign up next year. I hoped nothing happened before then so she won't be separated from me and my dad. The next morning there was a knock on the door. Ugh, Vault-Tec. They don't care about anyone but themselves. They just want to keep the city alive for the money. My dad stood there talking to the man with a fedora and a clipboard. I peeked through the stairway railings. I just got little bits and pieces of their conversation. We're all about safety. Have you signed your whole family? No? We'll take good care of her if the day comes, god forbid. Good day. The man walked across the street to annoy another home. My dad shut the door.

CHAPTER 2
I came out of my room and walked down the stairs. My dad was watching the television with a beer in one hand and a remote in the other. He was watching the news. My dad looked over his shoulder at me. "Go back to your room." I was confused, but my feet took me up the stairs anyway. I stopped when I heard "national emergency" come out of the tv. I listened. "War has been declared. All citizens signed for a vault needs to retreat to their vault immeadietly." My dad turned the tv off, and got out of his chair. I quietly ran up the stairs into my room. My dad showed up a few seconds later. "Pack your things, we're going to the vault." Shock went up and down my body, even though I already knew what was happening. I started sweating. "What about Kate?" I asked hoping for a good answer. "I'll figure it out, ok?" I nodded. He left the doorway, and I started throwing everything into my bag. I went for my dresser. The picture of my mom and me and Kate. It seemed like she was alive just yesterday. A tear escaped my eye, and I wiped it away, putting the picture in my coat pocket. I eventually packed everything. I walked into Kate's room, stopping at the doorway. My dad was holding Kate while she was crying. "I love you baby." He said softly.

CHAPTER 3
We walked outside and then I really understood what was happening. People running out of their homes with a few belongings, others driving, to their vault probably. We got in our car and my dad started it. We drove to the vault. Kate was in the backseat, while I sat in the front, looking out the window at the devastation happening outside. We went down a forest road, stopping at the end and getting out. A crowd of people lined up trying to get through a gate. Eventually, it was our turn. "Name?" Said a heavily armed man with another Vault-Tec clipboard. "Robert, Jack and Kate Thomas." The man wrote on the clipboard. "Ages?" My dad cleared his throat. "Forty-five, fifteen and fourteen". The man's face quickly changed. "Who's the fourteen year old?" My dad hesitated, and I would've too. He brought Kate to the front with him. "I'm going to have to take her with the rest of the kids to the vault for minors." He pulled Kate away while a confused look came onto her face. "I'll come for you, don't worry." Said my dad. "It's OK sir, we'll take good care of her." Said the man, putting her in another line leading into a Vault-Tec bus. "Your good to go sir." Said the man as he returned to the gate entrance.

CHAPTER 4
Our shoes clicked on the cold metal as we entered the vault. A group of people followed us inside. A few armed men stood on a platform. When everyone was inside, the vault door screeched shut. I turned around to see a man latch the door and go to the front of the crowd. "All right, people", said one of the Vault-Tec men,"we're going to run a sterilization really quick, then wee will proceed. Everyone find a chamber and get in. The people immediately went to a short hallway with glass chambers along the sides. I got in one, and dad in the one across from mine. The men came and shut all the chambers and sealed them. "It'll be fine." Dad said before they shut his chamber. Then they sealed mine. I felt cold, like something was wrong. I could hear the muffled voices of the men,"They have no idea." One said with a chuckle. Then I realized something was wrong. Mist and smoke filled the chamber, and it went dark.
