The feeling of being in the forest when the moon is dominating the nights sky always made Luhan unbelievably happy. At night, when he turns from a human into a wolf, he feels fearless as he sprints through the gaps between trees in an attempt to catch prey, rarely even getting near any. He was good at a lot of things. Socialising, talking his way out of sticky situations, transitioning painlessly between his wolf and human state. However, he was terrible at catching game.
"Nothing again?" Kris, one of his alpha's, asked as Luhan came back with Kai and Chen before sunrise one morning
"It's because Luhan can't fucking run to save his life. We were so close, so close!" Kai fumed sitting down to scratch behind his ear
The alpha frowned at Luhan disapprovingly.
"I was holding back so Kai or Chen could be able to claim the game as their own." He insisted "They get a lot happier than I do when they catch game."
That was a lie. Yes, Kai and Chen were proud when they caught game, however, if Luhan actually caught something he would be ecstatic. His way with words was the only reason he hadn't been reduced to the lowest of the lo w and forced to become an omega. That spot was filled by a the second youngest member of the pack after Kai, Tao (who managed to catch a cat last week).
In early August it was nearing 5AM. Luhan found himself alone in the middle of a clearing rolling in a pile of dry leaves that smelt of a squirrel. He had set off with Kai and Chen at 11PM but they disappeared together around 3AM. At that stage in the day there weren't many threats of being alone so he got up from the leaves and wandered around looking for game that was small enough for him to drag back himself. In the morning peace, as the insects began to wake up, a fresh breeze blew through Luhan's soft grey coat that carried the smell of musky perfume on it.
That and the smell of sweat. Human sweat.
His head snapped in an eastward direction where the wind had come form. Curiously he prowled forward, the smell getting stronger as he went.
"I don't know! If I knew where I am I would have left by now." A male's voice snapped quietly
Luhan didn't hesitate before pouncing towards the voice and saw a young man talking into his hand. Both of them froze. Fear gluing the boy to the ground whilst Luhan was processing the situation. Taking him as game would be almost too easy. Luhan growled at the boy bearing his sharp white teeth that could easily rip off his limbs if he wanted.
"M-m-mum. Are wolves dangerous?" The boy stammered wearily taking a step back from the wolf which only provoked Luhan to take a few strides forward "I-I'll call you back."
The boy lowered his hand revealing a small rectangular light in his hands and clenched it between his fingers. He stared at Luhan for a few seconds before swinging around and shooting off deeper into the forest. The prey had made two mistakes so far that day. Wearing such an attractive scent was his first, the second was trying to win a race against a wolf.
In a matter of minutes the boy was unconscious and being dragged back towards the abandoned house the pack used as a home. Slowly his body was transforming back into a human as he went. His snout shrinking and his claws retracting in the form finger nails. Luhan stopped dragging the boy by his teeth and switched to carrying him over his back whilst his hair retracted back into him. As he began to approach their home he heard shouting.
"The whole point of you all being separated into groups is so you can look out for each other so situations like this would be avoided. What if something's happened to him?" Suho, his other alpha, barked loudly "We all know Luhan isn't the sharpest tool in the shed, do you think-" He paused suddenly "Kris, do you smell that?"
