“Bye my loves!” My mother called from the porch, grinning as she waved at us.

“Bye mommy!” I called, blowing her a kiss.

“Be safe, please.” She said to my father after catching my kiss and rubbing it on her cheek. “If our daughter falls in the lake one more time, so help me...”

Her voice trailed off letting my father's imagination wander. He gulped loudly and nodded in a playful manner. “Yes ma'am!”

My father, Gerry Winters, stuffed the last of our things in the trunk of our station wagon and slammed the door. Waving to my mother once more, we drove off to begin our annual camping trip. Every year after summer break starts, my dad takes me on a camping trip deep in the forest. He started this when I just graduated kindergarten and I liked it so much that we kept going.

Being only ten, I didn't know exactly where we went, but I know that we were driving long enough to know we weren't in Los Angeles anymore. The sky started getting dark and my eyes kept fluttering open and shut, my belly full and satisfied by the McDonald’s we had just eaten. Suddenly, my dad started humming to me. I smiled. I like when he hums to me, but I like it better when he sang. Mommy says that Daddy's singing could bring world peace.

“If only everyone would listen.” I wondered out loud when she told me that.

Daddy's humming grew louder until he was full on singing. I grinned. He was singing my favorite song.

Isn't she lovely?

Isn't she wonderful?

Isn't she precious?

Less than one minute old.

I never thought,

through love we'd be,

making one as lovely as she.

But isn't she lovely?

Made from love.

I joined in the last two lines before I fell into a peaceful, dreamless sleep.

“Blue,” Daddy hummed in my ear, shaking me slightly.

“Mmm.” I groaned, opening my eyes slightly.

“We're here!” He smiled.

I completely opened my eyes and smiled at the sight. It was now day time and we were at the edge of the forest. The clock on the dash said 1:36 PM. I unbuckled my seat belt and hopped out, with the assistance of my dad because I was a little on the shorter side. His gray eyes met my same color ones and he smiled, in which I returned.

“Well?” I said.

“Well what?” He asked.

“Well, what are we waiting for?” And with that being said, I ran to the back of our car and popped open the trunk. I grabbed my duffel bag and my chair, along with my smallish mint green tent. Daddy chuckled and grabbed his things and a cooler full of cold drinks (mostly ginger ale because we're weird like that) and we trotted off into the woods, singing show tunes loudly, but not loud enough to disturb the animals. Off in the distance, I thought I heard a rustle and I stopped walking.

“Daddy?” I said. “Didn't you here that, too?”

He nodded and also stopped along the dirt path. I set down my things and he simply cocked his head to the side and waved me on. I love my dad. I get almost everything from him. My gray eyes, my red hair, and my curious, adventurous personality. I didn't get my height from him, though. He's like 6 foot 3. I'm the shortest in my class.

Rustling around in the trees, I couldn't spot anything other than plants and the occasional spider. My nose wrinkled whenever I saw one of those. Me and spiders have not gotten along in the past. At all. Suddenly, I saw something move on my left, just out of my vision. I quickly whipped my head in that direction. I was greeted with a big brown pair of eyes staring back at me. I smiled and trotted back to Daddy.

“It was just a deer.” I said, flicking a lady bug off of my duffel before picking up all my things and we headed to a our destination. After about ten more minutes of mindlessly walking and chatting about nothing, we came to a small circle of grass surrounded by trees. I looked at Daddy, and he grinned down at me.

“This is it.” He said.

“It's perfect!” I squealed and quickly began to set up my tent.

Daddy chuckled at my eagerness and began his process as well. My tent was completed first as per my tent was smaller and the fact that I began before Daddy.

“I'm gonna find fire wood.” I called, walking into the woods.

“Don't go too far!” Daddy called back, not looking up from his almost finished tent.

I nodded and continued on.

Daddy and I were sitting around silently crunched on s'mores. I was opening my mouth to ask Daddy to tell me a ghost story when we heard a howling noise. My eyes widened. Daddy's did, too. We listened intently. It sounded like more than one wolf.

“Hey Blue?” Daddy whispered to me. My head perked up in his direction. “Wanna go find them?”

I nodded eagerly and shoved the rest of my s'more in my mouth. Daddy stood and squatted down in front of me, signaling he wanted to give me a piggy back ride. I hopped on and we were off to go find the wolves. We walked for ten minutes before we came to a huge field and standing in the middle were three wolves, howling at the moon. Daddy and I stared in awe. Now, I've never seen a wolf before, but these wolves were absolutely huge. All of a sudden, they looked at us. Rather calmly, might I add. I looked down at Daddy but he was too focused on the wolves. One wolf bowed it's head so quickly, I thought I had just imagined it, and then they were gone.
