I walked through the busy crowd with my head down. Ignoring the hustle and bustle of the city streets I turned my headphones up to block out the noise. I had just gotten off work and was not in the mood to deal with people.

I got home and went straight to my room to change out of my work uniform, ignoring the cheerful greeting I got from my roommate. I changed into a green polo and black jeans. My name is James by the way, original I know, but it’s what was given to me. I’m about 6’3” pretty muscular build with shaggy blonde hair.

“What’s on tonight?” I asked my roommate Tim as I walked into the living room, he was planted on the couch feet up on the coffee table, this is where he normally was when he wasn’t at work or in the kitchen.

“Not much, but hey are you up for going out tonight?” he looked at me hopefully, I sighed before plopping on the other end of the shabby gray couch.

“Not really, why? Something going on tonight?” I asked him, not really caring about the answer.

“Well, there’s this underground carnival thing coming through town some guy at work was telling me about, I guess they have some legit zombies and stuff,” he explained not bothering to hide his excitement.

The zombies, well let me give you a history lesson on that, they weren’t dead then re-animated, it was just a virus like swine flu or any other, except for the fact it made people insane, it was what people call a ‘rage virus’. When someone got this virus they developed a taste for meat, raw or otherwise, and if you pissed them off, or they felt threatened and what not, they attacked. And it was transferred through bodily fluids much like aids would be. The outbreak occurred about two years before and they had all supposedly been killed off or quarantined. At least that’s what the government told us, but who knew what the truth was.

Needless to say this caught my attention. I thought about it for a minute before Tim started begging me for an answer.

“Alright, we’ll go, do you know where it’s at?” a huge grin crossed his face as he began explaining everything, talking so fast I almost couldn’t understand him.

An hour later we were making our way down a dark alley to an old abandoned warehouse. As we got closer the eerie silence eased away and we could hear people’s voices and laughter coming from inside, I was still not totally sure but Tim pushed me onwards and we eventually made it to the door.

There was a big buff biker looking dude at the door blocking entry until Tim handed him two tickets he had bought off the guy from work. After giving us a once over the guy moved aside and we made our way into the building.

Inside it was like a carnival, colored tents were set up all throughout the abandoned building, which really didn’t seem so abandoned once inside. There were throngs of people everywhere, all types of people. It was like a Freak-show of the old days, at least that’s way I’d imagine they’d looked like. There were vendors selling all sorts of things, from shrunken heads to voodoo dolls.

Tim headed straight to the shrunken heads booth, he tried to pick one up but got freaked out and dropped it, squealing like a girl and shaking his hands to rid them of the sensation of touching the leathery skin and course hair. I chuckled at him and urged him forward. We passed a lot of weird people, from a snake charmer, to a contortionist, to the weirdest of all… a bearded lady. I imagined she would have looked half decent if she didn’t have the thick black beard.
