I opened my eyes for the first time. The first thing I ever saw was the dead body of the deputy of my pack. The first thing I ever smelled was blood and the scent of death. The first thing I ever heard was bodies hitting the floor and mournful howling. The first thing I ever tasted was the filthy dirt beneath me.
I whined and curled back up with my mom. She wrapped her tail around me gingerly and covered me. I was in the bushes where my mom hoped no one would find us. My mom was a very thin, light brown wolf with 1 crimson paw. I was a grey wolf with a crimson muzzle, brown paws and a white tail tip. I had 1 blue eye and 1 green eye. My dad was a grey wolf with brown paws and a white tail. My dad was the leader of the pack. But that put him in grave danger at this point.
"I think I'll call you... Soul..." My mom said in a soft voice. Just then, my dad pounced into the bushes and motioned something to my mom using his tail.
She swiftly nodded and grabbed me in her teeth and ran into a cave, placed me in a patch of grass in the cave that was surrounded by rocks jutting up out of the ground, and ran back to the battle. I was cold, hungry, thirsty, alone, and scared. I whimpered and howled in fear, hoping that my mom would come back.
A dark grey wolf crept out of the darkness of the cave. He was much younger than my mom but much older than me. I guess you could say he was a teen. I reared back in my little bed.
"Hi..." He said gently. "I'm Ace. I was Abandoned here as a pup."
"I-I'm S-Soul..." I replied nervously. "I was just born. My mommy and daddy are fighting bad wolves right now. I'm scared that my mommy and daddy are going to die. And I'm scared that my mommy won't ever come back and get me."
Ace stepped into the bed and wrapped tail around me. "Don't worry. Just hope. Hope... That's what I didn't do. You are lucky to be as well prepared for the outside world as a grown-up wolf. I once tried to go out there as a pup. I nearly got eaten." He smiled. I tried to smile, too.
"I'm really happy that you're here actually, Soul. I've been alone for what feels like an eternity. I never really had anyone to talk to except myself. And when I talk to myself I feel like an idiot." Ace looked down at me and saw my muzzle and stared. "Um... Is your muzzle naturally that color?" He asked nervously.
I nodded.
"Cool. Sorry I talk so much. I've never actually talked to anyone before. Well, there's the ocelot in that cave over there. She taught me everything and basically raised me. If you're mommy never comes back... Consider her your mommy."
I was starting to get tired and I yawned.
"Are you sleepy, Soul?"
"Uh-huh."
"Okay. Sweet dreams. I'll bring you a squirrel from outside tomorrow.
"NO!" I barked.
"What?"
I was getting scared. "Don't leave me. I don't wanna be lonely."
"I'll just get something from my room. OH! That reminds me! Follow me, Soul." Ace motioned me to follow him.
I followed Ace into a different part of the cave. It was a spacious little room. In the corner there was a small pile of food and a hole of fresh water. In the middle of the room there was a patch of grass. There was a crack that let in a bit of light. It was a beautiful room.
"Welcome to your room, Soul."
"MY room?"
"Yep! My room is across from yours. This is your room and yours alone."
I curled up in the patch of warm grass and went to sleep.
I woke up later that day. In front of me was a plump squirrel. It had a small bite taken out of it. Ace came in to greet me.
"Hey, you're up! Yay! I left you a squirrel from my room. I bit into it to make sure it was safe to eat. It's safe to eat." Ace said brightly.
I took a large bite out of the squirrel.
"Yum!" I barked as I took another big bite out of the squirrel.
A spotted cat padded out into my room. I slowly pulled the squirrel closer to me. She was a pretty creature but I didn't want ANYONE to take my squirrel.
"This is Persia. She's the ocelot I told you about." Ace said.
"She's pretty." I smiled.
Persia started acting alert.
"Persia?" Ace barked worriedly.
A large bear crept in. It had a murderous look on its face. It snarled. Ace ran over and shielded me. I looked through the gap between Ace's stomach and the ground and watched as Persia basically ripped the bear apart. Ace stopped shielding me and I got up and ran to the bear. I sniffed it, poked it, bit it, kicked it, and spit on it. It was dead.
An image of the dead deputy flashed through my head. I backed away. I lied down once again.
Persia looked at me at purred: "Your home isn't far. Do you want to see your mommy and daddy?"
I hopped up quickly.
"YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES!" I barked.
