The Amazon, is the largest rain forest in the world. So big it generates half its own rainfall. Its the richest Ecosystem on the planet. So diverse its home to a third of all life falls on Earth. Its hot, wet Climate changes a little threw the year, in such dependable conditions, life has run wild. But the Amazon isn't just one world, it is many. From sunlit tree tops, to dark forest floor. High cloud forest, To low lit palm swamps. Its a Jigsaw of different life forms, which animals and people have developed such interesting ways to survive in this dangerous forest. In driving it all is the mightiest river of them all. The Amazon covers over 18 kilometers of South America. If it were a country, it would be the 6th largest in the world! It is formed over the last 15 million years, since the Indies mountains began to rise . Forcing the Amazon river to flow West to East. Today 60 percent of the Amazon lays on Brazil, and the remaining 40 percent is spread across 8 more countries.
Straddling the Equator it is permanently hot and wet. Ideal conditions for life. Its unrivaled anywhere in terms of its Bio diversity, and the secret to success here is specialization. For the animals that can reach it the Amazons canopy is green eaten. 45 meters above ground, it is open and bathed in sunshine. The sun delivers the equivalent energy of 6 million etonic bones to the Amazon everyday. Countess trillion of leaves photosynthesize in 12 hours of light, 365 days a year. They pump out 20 percent of the Earths oxygen. And produce uncountable numbers of fruits and seeds each and every day. The canopy is the most productive part of the forest. Its a land of plenty, but not without challenges. From above it appears to be a unbroken carpet of green, but in reality the branches of each tree rarely touch each other. And with the ground and dizzy and distance below, getting about can be tricky. There are over 100 different species of the Brazilian Amazon alone, and each has evolved a different way of coping with they're tree top existence.
Red Howler Monkeys take it steady and climb but slowly threw the branches, they're one of the heaviest monkeys in the forest. They like to be sure were they are putting their feet. A muskuler tail is a built in safety rope, life in the trees isn't easy but it does have its advantages. A jaguar can't climb all the way to the canopy. So monkeys are rarely on the menu. Tiny Squirrel Monkeys dash threw the branches, in a much more faster route than a Howler Monkey. They use they're tails not for griping, but for balance. These little light weights, can get to parts of the canopy that most can not. They weigh less than a kilo on the smallest of twigs and vines support them, a small plant hold insects hiding among the leaves which are perfect for their little teeth. The insects give the little monkeys protein and energy for the day. The Amazon holds weird yet interesting ways for animals to survive.
