It was dawn, maybe 4:38 A.M. to say the least as orange seeped trough the East mountains, the air was still and dry. I was at an abondoned gas station filling up my tank, leaning against the jeep with my hands in my jacket pockets I was lost in thought. All I could remember were the harships of blurs and toned out voices, maybe a feeling of emptiness at some point but that was it. However I still do remember the break out of the facility, my dead mother... all of that was a present memory since it happened only a week ago. I was brought to when Hewie bumped my shoulder, reaching with my left hand I scratched the top of his head. I looked at him and then around the area I was at and just felt calm, I had rid the population of infested dead walking things and set traps for those trying to find me. I found Hewie in a building three days prior, skinny, about to give up on life, and yet he pulled through; now he's healthy and my best friend.
"Hey boy, beautiful morning huh?" I smiled to him as I held his head in both of my hands.
His response was a lick to my face which made me chuckle.
It wasn't a joke, this morning unlike others seemed beautiful. Once my gas tank was full I pulled the nosel out and then opened up the door so Hewie could jump out.
"What do you say we get something for the road, slim jim sound good?" I looked down to him as he wagged his tail and let out a slight bark.
"Alright, let's do it." I said and patted his side.
I walked into the gas station which was a 7/11 by the way with my hand on my gun just in case, I had rule now. It was dark on the inside of the station but I could manage, I walked over to the Slim jims and beaf jerky aisle loading up my bag, pokets, what ever I could. I saw Hewie over by the pastry and sweets as I shook my head.
"Nope, no getting fat, that's bad for you. You don't want that now do you?" I walked over to Hewie and crouched down holding a piece of jerky in front of his nose.
"This right here is gold, protien keeps you strong and healthy. This, this is good. That is bad. Say no to sweets." I let his take it and chew it up as I grabbed bottles of water too.
Once I grabbed all that I could with Hewie carrying a bottle of water in his mouth as well, we headed out to load up. He jumped in the passenger seat as I put all the food and snacks and water on the floor and in the back seat where the ammunition and weapons are. I kissed the top of Hewie's head and then walked around to my side, hopping in and starting it up.
"Alright, well we have a long ride ahead of us, how about some tunes huh? I got one that I know you'll enjoy." I said while pulling out a CD and putting it in the player. Bob Marely's Is This Love started to play.
Hewie wagged his tail and I smiled, driving out of the station and onto the road. While on the road I rolled down the windows as Hewie stuck his head out and let his tongue hang to blow in the wind. It was nice out so I slouched in my seat and propped up my left elbow driving with only my right. I put on some shades to block the sun's brightness to my eyes. After the CD was done playing Bob Marley's tracks, I tuned into the broadcast radio of survivors but all I got were "Stay safe" and "Curfew hours at 6-7 P.M. sharp". Whatever.
