December 23rd
this is a lesson plan for all those still alive. Run. Keep running and never look back
as you know, it started with these people, getting ill, passing out, and waking up, with no reflection of what happened. That sparked the recalls. First grain, then dairy, then means. No one was sure what caused it, and they still aren't.
About a week after that, people started disappearing. Right after falling ill with the virse, they would disappear. Most of my best friend's family vanished out of thin air.
And this smell, this lingering smell of death and decomposition hanging in the air. Something was off, something wasn't right.
Then this morning, it all unfolded. I woke up, got dressed and left for school. Nothing completely out of the ordinary, other than that foul smell that seemed to stick to the air.
When I went to walk to school and get coffee, that's when things took a turn for the worst.
My best friend and I met for coffee every day before school. I arrived, and waited for 10 minutes outside in the cold winter weather. She didn't show.
Puzzled, I walked, to order my coffee.
" the regular please" A peppermint mocha with a slice of coffee cake, That's when the barista collapsed.
I ran behind the counter to make sure she was ok.
" hello? Are you all right?" I asked, she looked at me with a glazed look.
" Do I know you?" She asked she looked ill, her face pail, dark circles around her eyes, ashy skin, and her eyes cast dark shadows on her frail face. She seemed thin.
" yes. I'm Erin, Alice and I come around every morning"
"I'm sorry, I dont know who you are," She paused for a second "could you tell me who I am?
This was concerning first, why was this happening, and second, who was going to get my coffee?
There was a dead silence or should I say undead. I placed my arm on her shoulder
"Do I need to call an ambulance?" She just looked at me with blank, dead, cold eyes. With quick, almost inhuman like reflexes; she grabbed for my arm, and pulled it towards her open jaw, which now dropped at an uncomfortable angle.
" GET OFF!" I screamed as I forced my feet toward her chest, kicking her in the ribs. She should have been down for the count, but she got up and came after me once more.
" STAY BACK!" I yelled, pushing a table in front of her. She moaned and came closer. She walked with a slight limp, one I had never seen before. I grabbed my bag and booked it to the school.
I decided to call Alice. She had been my best friend since, well forever, we met in 4th grade and became instant friends. She was like my sister.
The call went to voicemail
"Alice? Where are you? I was just attacked! This is rather odd and strange and odd, and I know I'm jumping to conclusions, but I fear it's finally happening. There is finally a zombie invasion. I hope you're ok. Call me as soon as you get this"
I speed to school, looking over my shoulder. I headed to my first class, but it was locked. So I headed to the only place I knew was safe: the band room in the corner of the school. My favorite class.
The door was unlocked, so I ran through it, bracing myself against the back side of the door.
There were people huddled in the corner, a few students of the school.
" Hello?"
There were 3 of them, 2 boys, and 1 girl.
" are you ok?" I asked
"a better question is you all right" one of them asked "you haven't been bitten?"
" No" I answered walking closer
"well good, I'm John" the older one said standing up, coming to shake my hand.
"Erin" I said, grasping it.
" that's Eliza and James, we are the only ones left of the first period bunch. First we though the band director didn't get his coffee this morning, but then it turned in to an all out brawl between the student and the staff. It was fun, until you lose your best friend to those foul things"
"Zombies?" I asked
he nodded
"we are surving right? How much food do we have?" I asked
"three packed lunched"
So I stepped into action, picking up a color guard saber.
" Allons-y?" I said. He furrowed his eyebrows.
"Let's go, in French"
We decided two of us would stay behind, while the other two went to get food. I went to get food with John, while Eliza and James stayed behind. We grabbed mallets, sabers, flutes and clarinets, to stab things with. We went around breaking in to store after store, stealing all we needed. The owners where flesh eating zombies now, they had no need of this stuff anymore. We stole various cars, even though I was under age, who was going to stop me from driving, the zombie police?
We gathered up food, which would last us about a day or so, along with other necessities, like a plug in heater, sleeping bags, and clothing.
There weren't very many zombies, so we didn't need very much protection.
We came back with the bundles, blocking the doors, locking them behind us. And with a good meal, the first day ended, and I thought I was going to be just fine.
But what about all the other people. My parents, Alice, her family, where did they all go?
And I really hoped and prayed to god that they were all ok.
