I walked into the office and flung the doors open, the musky smell of dampness and coffee startled me. As I wandered through the maze of desks, my lower officers and colleagues stared up at me with a look of respect plastered across their faces. I was after all, the top officer in the county. It’s only expected. “Hey Earl! Got a report case for you here, old guy was found dead in Elmer last night. The chief wants you to go check it out...” shouted Edward Mira; a new rookie on the team.

“My office; now... Oh and bring the files.” I replied; a sudden haste about my actions. Several people had already been killed in Elmer Graveyard in the last few months. Edward had already started explaining the situation, except I was so caught up in my own thoughts; nothing he was saying seemed to be registering.

“Wait, start again? It’s not making sense right now...”

“Right right! Basically; Ivor Loriar was found dead last night in Elmer. That’s pretty much all I know. But we’ve arranged for a witness to come in later for questioning; they’ll be able to give you more information to work with.”

Later that day, Hazel, a maid for one of the town’s big houses cautiously approached my office door as if wondering whether this was such a good idea after all. I was thinking the same, she looked so nervous and upset, i doubted whether she’d be able to describe any of the events of Ivor’s death without crumbling into pieces. “Hey hazel, I’m Earl Westward, any information you can give us about Ivor’s death would be a huge help, so anything you can remember...” Suddenly, the words started tumbling from her mouth without hesitation.

“He was just sat there with his head in his hands, screaming and screaming. I couldn’t tell you why. I tried to get closer to him to see what was wrong but he just pushed me away and shouted. Then the noises started, screeches and cries, the wind got more powerful and yet again he just screamed. I didn’t know what to do, so I ran and hid. Thinking this was something of his own doing. But then he started running towards me. Someone else seemed to be chasing him, but they just appeared from nowhere. The other person was really fast though, dodging through headstones and then he caught him. I just saw Ivor led there screaming with the man crouched over him. I put my head in my hands now, hoping this was all a dream but it wasn’t. It could have been at the time, it seemed so stupid because as soon as I looked up again, they were both gone. I didn’t see what the person looked like but he wasn’t human. That’s for sure. I’m sorry i couldn’t help much, but I really do hope you find someone that can help you more. He was a lovely man...” We shook hands and I let her out of the doors, I  followed her though and started walking. Elmer graveyard was only a few miles away.

About thirty minutes later and I was stood at Ivor’s death place, marked off with police tape and security guards. A surge of fear suddenly flowed through me. What was there to save me from this vicious killer? If he really wasn’t human, he could take all of us out in a few minutes. Who was it? What was it? Hazel had sworn it wasn’t human. What about Ivor’s wounds? They were so... Delicate and hidden. Hazel described the death as Ivor being almost ripped apart as blood was left all over the scene. Yet, the only visible wounds were two punctures in his neck and bruising to the skull. Unless there was more, something else that we hadn’t noticed, or maybe it hadn’t been there at all before? Suddenly, I span round, someone else was here. I could feel eyes watching me, almost as if they wanted me to know they were here. Someone or something glided past my face. I could feel the cold touching my skin and a flash of colour before they were gone again. One of the security guards approached with a gun, he wasn’t focusing though. I followed his gaze into the nearby trees and that was when I saw it. It was sat casually in the tree as if this was an everyday occurrence. Gazing down at us, he was tall and muscular; but you could tell he was a killer. Everything from his eyes to his fangs. Fangs, he had fangs... I had to go. I ran as fast as I could without looking back.
