Whispering voices surround me in the darkness, just out of hearing range. With every moment they come closer, but they seem fuzzy, as if coming over a broken radio. Bits and pieces of words come through clearly, but not enough to form a coherent sentence. Static begins to overpower the words, then, with a pop, everything clears. "Is she online yet? We do have a deadline, you know." " I know, I know, but this can't be rushed! If she malfunctions, the consequences could be..... Agh!" A shiver runs through me and green words swim out of the black abyss. System online. Environmental scan complete. Status: Safe. Booting up...... " What happened, what is it?!" "I...I don't know. I think she's activating herself!" " What?! How is that possible? Shut her down! Shut her down now!" A world erupts into being around me, lights stabbing into my eyes and making me squint. A sort of burning pain in my chest and the back of my head make me wince, and I slowly begin to sit up. " I'm afraid it's a bit too late for that." I lift a hand to the back of my head and turn. Two men are standing about a foot away from me, eyes wide in fear. One is wearing an oil-stained apron and gloves, and the other is wearing a spotless white lab coat. I raise an eyebrow at them both. "Would one of you fine gentlemen mind telling me where I am?"
