"If only sugar were medicine" Pinocchio

A week went by and my mom and I still weren't talking. In fact I think she was avoiding me around the house because when I did see her she was poking her head out of her room and when she saw me she would quickly snap her head back in. She wasn't there at meal time so I had to cook and the only thing I know how to make is mac'n cheese. So that is all I ate. simple as that.

School was a bore and things went back to the way it was before Sam accept mom didn't talk to me any more and I exchanged a minimum of words with Sam. Sam occasionally asked what's wrong but I brushed it off and used the" I'm just tired" excuse. That worked for about a week until Sam started to get suspicious of my answer.

I thought nothing of it, well that was a mistake. One Saturday morning I woke up to a knock at our door. "Most likely a salesman." I said to myself. So I closed my eyes in an attempt to go back to sleep when suddenly I heard the door bell ring several times, it sounded like a fire alarm. my eyes flew open," And a persistent one at that" I muttered, I hurried down stairs before he could awaken my mom.

I opened the door ready to scold the salesman for being such an idiot at 7 in the morning, when I saw the petite figure of Sam at the door way. She looked dressed up with her curly hair and sundress while I was standing there in my Donald Duck PJ's.

" hey " she said casually. " hi?" I said cautiously. I had never had a friend over at my house before especially at 7:00 AM. " can I come in?" she asked. not thinking I answered "sure" I knew I made the mistake when she walked in and cringed at the reeking scent of alcohol burned into our walls. I was of course mortified, but thank goodness she was polite enough to not say any-"Does one of your parents drink?" nope spoke too soon. A bunch of lies ran through my mind that I have told other people, like My uncle does and he is staying here for a while, or no, that's our laundry detergent.

But I knew the truth was going to come out one time or another so I decided to pull off the bandage fast and get it done and over with. So I gave the most vague but truthful answer I could, " mmhm" I mumbled. " oh" she replied thank god she didn't ask questions I wouldn't know what to say. So I changed the subject, " wacha doing here any way?" I asked curiously. " Well," she shifted uncomfortably. she was probably thinking about what a dump this is compared to her place as she was scanning the room. " I thought since you have been to my house I should get to yours."

" Also I was thinking" " well that's never good" I interrupted sarcastically. Sam rewarded my joke with a smile. than continued," I was thinking that we are best friends yet we know nothing about each other, so I brought over a 20 questions game."

I wasn't sure if I actually wanted to play this game but I couldn't say no so I agreed to play. The questions were silly and easy like, what's your favorite color? or how many pairs of socks I had? It ended up being kinda fun, but the only interesting thing I learned about Sam was that she had an older brother that was a Junior at our school and his name is Riley. After we finished answering about 50 questions each and it was about 2:00 in the afternoon Sam decided she needed to head home because of the monster amount of homework our teachers gave us this weekend. We said our goodbyes and I decided officially that I trusted her, and that says a lot coming from me.
