A flaming blue iris lit up the darkness that had been shrouding me. It's eerie glow was neither welcoming, nor intimidating. But it wasn't a human eye. The iris had no sclera surrounding it, no white of a normal eye. The rest of the eye was completely dark.
Any words I tried to speak were caught in my throat, and made their way back down into the pit of my stomach.
I was frozen where I stood, but I wasn't afraid of the eye. Awe described the feeling better than fear.
Then, as quickly as it had come into existence, the flaming iris flickered out, like a candle in the wind.

"Beep-beep, beep-beep."
I rolled over on my bed, trying not to focus on the noise.
"BEEP-BEEP, BEEP-BEEP."
Groaning, I attempted to muffle the sound with a pillow.
"BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!! BEEP!!"
I slammed my hand over the 'OFF' button on the alarm clock.
Staying up all night finishing the last of the unpacking last night had done a number on my sleep schedule.
I sat up in bed, rubbing my eyes. Sunlight streamed through the window, bathing the room in a warm yellow glow.
I swung my legs over the side of the mattress, breathing a sigh of relief. "NOOO MOOORE PAAARENTS...." I sang.
Then reality set it; I needed roommates. I couldn't afford a nice apartment alone while working as a barista. Not in the long run, anyway.
I grabbed my laptop from off a nearby desk and began typing out a request online for a roommate, including my email for responses.
Clicking the button to publicize the request, I glared at my clock. Twenty minutes until work starts. Twelve minutes is how long it takes to get there.
I hurriedly threw on a tee shirt and skinny jeans, not caring about makeup. Or rather, not having time to. I brushed out my hair, ripping out some in the process.
I slipped my thin phone into the back pocket and hurried out the door, slipping on ankle sneakers on my way.

"Hey, G," a coworker greeted, a relaxed smile on his face. "You ok with being here alone for a few?"
"Sure, Matthew." I replied. "But you're giving me ten percent of your wage this week for me to keep your little secret."
Matt grinned, and turned to walk out the door. "Make sure Julie don't see my stash, alright?"
"No promises."
The bell on the door jingled lightly, signaling someone had entered the bar.
Two females walked in and sat down in front of me at the bar, smiling at each other.
The taller one had blueish "skin", with fish scales covering her body, and small fins on the sides of her head. Her body language oozed confidence, and a thirst for action. When she grinned, I could see her sharp teeth that looked like they could easily tear me limb from limb. An eyepatch also covered her left eye, like a pirate's. I didn't feel like getting on her bad side.
"Hey Alphys, what do you want?" she asked the shorter monster, who awkwardly glanced between me and the taller monster.
The monster called Alphys stood much shorter than the fish-like one, her skin a muted yellow. She seemed to be a lizard, a chameleon maybe. She wore a lab coat and tapped her claws anxiously on the bar counter as she spoke quietly,
"I-I'll just h-have a Coke, p-please.." she stammered out.
I smiled politely at her nervousness. Social anxiety was something I could relate to. "Alright. And you?" I looked over to the scaly girl.
"Lemme have a...uh, Alphys? What are those red human drinks called, the ones that look like blood and taste kinda like grapes?"
Alphys giggled. "Er, red wine, Undyne?"
The fish woman's eyes lit up as she shouted, "YEAH! Red Wine, please!!"
I couldn't help but grin. "Sure. Comin' right up, girls."
The monster named Undyne thanked me by yelling in pleasure and punching the counter, nearly leaving a hairline fracture in the oak wood.
Alphys gripped her wrist lightly and pulled it from the counter, eyeing me apologetically.
I smiled at her and waved it off, fetching a can of Coca-Cola. "So, where are you two from? It's only been about a month since the underground flooded with you guys." I said, smirking. With as much as(most of)my family despised monsters, it engaged my curiosity. I began to research, and I found myself interested with all the different kinds of monsters, their royalty and such.
Undyne's fierce smile faded slightly into a serious frown. "You're the first human who hasn't said that sarcastically."
I raised my eyebrows and looked over at Alphys. "Really?"
The lizard nodded. "People haven't taken a liking to monsters. Undyne got a pineapple thrown at her yesterday."
Undyne bared her teeth. "I'll get the punk back sooner or later...", she grumbled.
I snorted under my breath slightly at the thought as I fixed a wine, but felt bad for them both. "Do you guys live nearby? I live in the apartment complex a few blocks down."
"The bright yellow one?" the bright yellow monster asked.
I nodded, setting their drinks in front of them. "With the broken elevator."
Undyne clapped her hands together, either in glee or rage, I couldn't exactly tell. "We live in that building too!!!"
"Awesome," I replied. "That's on the house, by the wa-" I began, but was cut off by an alert sound on my phone. Glancing down at its screen as I pulled it out of my pocket, I saw I had a text message from an email I didn't recognize.
Grace, or whoever gets this text,
i saw your application thingy for roommates. Me and my brother have been looking for a place, and my bro's been feeling kind of bonely with no one but me around. Just text back when you can and we could get things sorted out, I guess. Maybe you'll throw us a bone and let us move in if you want?
-Sans
p.s, we're both male monsters, hope ya don't mind.
I frowned, reading through the message carefully. Maybe he had just missed the 'L' key when typing? It wasn't like the 'b' and 'l' were right next to each other on the keyboard, though.
Their name was strange too. Who names their child after a font?
I shrugged mentally. I knew a girl named Miss Issippi Flood in high school, so Sans wasn't that strange.
I turned back to Undyne and Alphys, who were contentedly sipping their drinks. Well, Alphys was, anyway. Undyne gulped down her wine like it was nothing.
I cringed slightly, turning to Alphys. "If you came here in a car, It would be safer for you to drive back." I muttered.
Alphys smiled slightly, shaking her head. "Monsters aren't affected by alcoholic drinks the way humans are. And even for a monster, Undyne has a high alcohol tolerance." she explained, no longer stuttering on her words.
Matthew strolled back in, eyeing all three of us. He frowned at Alphys and Undyne, his nose wrinkling up slightly, but he didn't say anything.
"Like I said," Alphys muttered once Matt was out of the room. "people haven't taken a fancy to the sudden influx of monsters."
I sighed in agreement, knowing all too well the extent of people's anger, even hatred, towards monsters. "It'll only get worse."
The lizard nodded. "How much were the drinks, by the way?" she asked, reaching for a small purse that had been hanging at her side.
"It's on the house when it's your first drink here." I said with a polite smile.
"Really? Thanks!" Undyne chimed in. I could've sworn I saw a small blush blossom across Alphys' face for just a moment, before disappearing.
Both girls stood up and turned to leave, since their drinks were finished. Before they left, though, Alphys rushed back up and placed a five dollar bill in my hand.
Surprised, I said, "Hey, I said it was free!"
Alphys grinned in a friendly way as she left with Undyne. "Think of it as a tip."
I waved them goodbye as the small bell chimed again, and the door swung shut.
