I couldn't believe what I had just heard. I just got off the phone with my fathers doctor, he only has 3 months. He had been diagnosed with lung cancer about 3 years ago, because of his old age it was a harder struggle to face.
I packed my bags as soon as I could and hit the 4 hour drive from Michigan to Toronto. I had moved to Michigan when I was 16 so I could have the privilege of learning in the United States.
The drive was a long and silent one. When I reached London Ontario, I stop at the Gas Station to buy a drink. That was the only stop I made, for I desperately wanted to go see my father. The last time I saw him, he was very ill. I guess he wont be looking any healthier today.
When I arrived at my fathers home, I was surprised at how big it was. He had moved out of our old apartment, and into a house big enough to be called a mansion. As I got out of my car, I walked to my trunk and pulled it open to grab my stuff.
"Welcome Ms. Morales, don't worry I'll get those."
A man who looked like he was about 40 years of age, pushed past me to grab my stuff.
"Your father is inside waiting for you. Don't worry I will take your things up to your room"
I mumbled a quick 'Thank you' and ran to the house. I was greeted by a woman who's name I don't know.
"Hello there Ms. Morales, my name is Ingrid, Welcome home."
I gave her a look which wiped the smile off her face. I quickly apologized and she forgives me.
"I'll bet your looking for your father, am I right?"
I nodded my head slightly
"Yes ma'am, could you take me to him?"
She didn't say anything just started walking away, so I followed. After walking up several stairs, I find myself standing in front of a large door. The woman knocks on the door and I hear a faint 'come in' which sounded very weak. As I walk in I see a small figure laying in the large bed placed on the centre of the bedroom. I keep staring at the frail body, trying to figure out who it was. Finally, I recognize the man under the pale white sheets. Tears, threatening to fall in any second. He says something, but it is barely a whisper, so I move closer.
"Sweetheart? I love you. Did you know that?"
At that I let my first tear fall, knowing it wouldn't be the last.
"Yes sir, I love you too"
After that he had fallen asleep so I got up, kissed his forehead and before I left I whispered 3 words.
"Don't leave me."
Not knowing my father wasn't asleep I heard a faint mumble saying 'Never'. I waited until I was in my own room before I let all the tears fall. That night I cried myself to sleep. Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day.
